Basically:
  • Create a new administrator account, and log in to it.
  • Delete the currently named "Major User" account that is actually a standard account.
  • Rename your currently named "Standard User" back to "Major User".

If I am logged in to my MU account (c:\User\Standard User) and delete the SU account (c:\User\Major User) won't that also delete everything stored under c:\User\Major User?

You'll only want to delete your (c:\User\Standard User) account with the "MU" name, and not your (c:\User\Major User) with the "SU" name.

Doing so, will only remove that account, and nothing in the other account.

Be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first of course.

Hi,

So, I'm going to try to make sense out of this for myself. Here is the three pronged approach you provided:

1. Create a new administrator account, and log in to it.

2. Delete the currently named "Major User" account that is actually a standard account.

3. Rename your currently named "Standard User" back to "Major User".

Regarding

1. If I create a new administrator account can I call it ‘Administrator’? What will be its directory path (do I have any say over this)? Do I need to keep this new account around afterwards? If I delete the account will it delete the directories that were generated when I created it?
2. When I delete the Major User account (which we will assume has no admin privs), will it delete all its “c:\User\Standard User” directories with their files etc.?
3. You are suggesting renaming “Standard User” back to “Major User” because you’re thinking that that way the “Major User” account name will now align with the c:\Users\Major User directories. But that’s not what I really want. What I want is to keep everything that is under “c:\Users\Major User” displaying when I log on as “Standard User”. I know this is getting confusing so let me try to put this out one more time again…..I intend to log on as “Standard User” (a non-privileged account) on a daily basis. When I log on as “Standard User”, what I want is the desktop (files directories yadee yadee) that I have available using which are located at “c:\Users\Major User” showing up in a path that reads “c:\Users\Standard User”. Apparently it isn’t possible to just go and rename the part after “c:\Users” to be “Standard User” instead of “Major User”, right?

Hi,

I haven't begun working on it per se. I put it on hold as I had other things come to the fore. I will reply again after I've been able to return to this.

Thank you!!

Hi Shawn,

I tried your 'How To' on page 1 (steps 1-27) and it worked but it also changed the icons on all my desktop shortcuts - they've all got the same icon now (one of the standard system 32 folder icons). Plus, it removed all the shortcut arrows.

Any idea what went wrong?

Hello SWLD,

That would be separate than that what the tutorial would change.

Rebuild the icon cache to see if it may just be corrupted.

If that didn't help, then download and merge the .reg file for the listed lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below to restore it's default associations to see if that may.
Default File Type Associations - Restore
If that didn't help, then see if using the tutorial below to restore the default shortcut arrow overlay icon may.
Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore
Hope this helps for now,
Shawn
