    Thanks Brink.
It didnt entirely solve my problem but was the first step in fixing it.
After applying your reg fix I was able to select from the list of available microsoft apps, but not the third party app that I wanted. I chose notepad, but for some reason it also added media center. I tried this several times (apply reg fix, chose from list) and always ended up with media center as an option.
In the end I created a new user, got the extension associated with my third party app, then copied the registry entry for Bas_auto_file from the new user into the registry for the original user and that solved the problem.

    As a question:
When I opened 'default programs' and tried to edit .bas filetype, the checkbox was greyed out with a tick in it and it wouldnt let me add any other program. Just as right clicking on the file and selecting "open with" went through the actions but wouldnt allow me to choose anything but the standard set of MS apps to associate it with.

    That's great news Cravenhaven.

Yeah, the .bas download here will only restore the default associations of not being associated to open with any program.

Using Open with usually makes it easier to set default programs for a file. If the program isn't listed, you should be able to manually browse to and select the .exe file for the program you wanted to use instead.

Thats what i tried to do, but it wouldnt let me associate my program or in fact any other program other than what was listed in the "open with" box. I guess there's something wrong with the registry for my user.

Someone else recently had a similar problem with trying to open files saved with Works where the problem appeared after a clean install of Windows went on. The files seemed to be in the original Works format when opened up for viewing but after a file save would revert to the WPEntrust Signed Document form.

    It worked!

    Hi,

Thanks so much for that information. I was really scared-yesterday my comp. was working fine but then BAM! Something went wrong while I was online and I couldn't directly open any file. Now it's all good.

After being attacked by a fake virus alert and cleaning it off my system with avg, all my ".exe" programs kept prompting for a program to open with. I downloaded the "exe - Executable application files" from this site and "merged" as directed. The fix worked perfectly. All exe files open and run correctly. Thank you.

I have a computer that just had the Security Center 2012 spyware on it. I removed it with an anti spyware program, but now when I try to open any program on the computer (EXE), I get the box asking what to open with.

I downloaded the EXE fix from the origonal post, but when I try to run the Merge, it says that registry editing has been disabled.

My question is, can I run the merge from a user account that has admin rights (which I have), and will it still fix the issue for this one user account? Just wondering since I notice the registry file references the HKEY\Current User\ registry entries.
