    Hey John,

It sounds like she may have associated shortcuts (.lnk) to open with Word since all icons have Word.

You might see if downloading and merging the .reg files for the listed .lnk (LNK) and .exe options in the tutorial may help.

If not, then she can also do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened.

Thanks Shawn and sorry late reply but had to leave for work - cutting a very long story short we finally got a system restore to work and it is back to normal. Lynne was just flummoxed by that message re what to open a file with in whatever she was looking at - in Pictures I think it was. Without knowing this happens she just hit Word thinking it was what was needed.
So all's well that ends well

Hello L13, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm sorry, but .VFS file types are not listed by default in the registry by Windows.

What issue are you having with them?

Thank you so much for the tip. It worked just fine and resolved a problem that had me contemplating reinstalling my O/S. You are an amazing source of valuable information.

Hello Cadaver, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

I'm happy to hear that this was able to help.

You could also use Default Programs to set Windows Media Player as the default program for all of it's associations to do so.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ociations.html

If Windows Media Player is not listed in Default Programs, then see if using step 7 in the tutorial below will add it back to be able to set it in Default Programs.
