Default File Type Associations - Restore

I think that the note is a good idea but when I tried it I couldn’t view the contents, “edit” wasn’t on the menu, I could only run it. Probably my ineptitude but “There's really not a way to fix the user” . How about including a “read me” text file in the zip with the .reg file?

Of course being a typical European I am naturally cynical and I did have a look at the registry using regedit so I could see the changes made and now appreciate what you say – but – this was inevitably after the event. I think that it’s the leap of faith that troubles people in the position I was in. Having been badly savaged by the dammend machine we are very cautious.

Whilst I appreciate that there will be a proportion of people who mistakenly cause the problem by messing with the configuration I don’t remember so many suffering from extension association problems with previous releases of windows. A search on “.lnk association” leads me to suspect that there is more to it. Certainly in my case I didn’t do it knowingly, I have an idea that the association change took place as a symptom of using the “open with” choice after a right click on a programme I wanted to examine the contents of before running it. But I might be wrong…

Certainly your fix is infinitely preferable to using system restore especially when a machine is just being loaded; so much is changed in such a short time. It’s not just that it works but also that has elegance and it doesn’t involve downloading many Megs of dubious data from nanny at Redmond. Once again, many thanks for a great service!

There is another question however, your missing right-click "Edit" entry. This is a Windows default. You may need to run the reg entry from this tutorial to get it back.

Having had a bit of a play,it appears that the options presented on a right clik are context sensitive and the edit option is avaialable for files where there is an associated editor.

So, jpegs etc have the edit option but exe's and suchlike don't. This all seems logical and doesn't present any problems at the moment. Most files don't have the "open with" option (but some do) so if I want to peek at the content I have to use wordpad by opening it first and then opening the relevant file.

So.... I don't thnk there is a problem there but I will have a look at the possibilities.
