Default File Type Associations - Restore

I tried your instructions from restoring my missing "compress zip file" link but only got a few stern warnings about how it could hurt my pc and the last window telling me that the keys and values were successfully dowloaded to my regisrty. I did not get any of the windows after clicking save (which I did not even have the opportunity to save to desktop), download or merge. Basically I couldn't get past the first step. Yes, I'm logged in as admin.

What browser are you using?

See if you may be able to right click on the download link in the tutorial, click on Save target as, and save to your Desktop.

I primarily use Firefox but I also tried IE to do this too.

I was able to save as target to the desktop but still can't extract the files.

You would want to "merge" the downloaded REG file instead. There's nothing to extract.

See the yellow tip box under step 3 to see if that may be the issue.

Yellow tip box? Step 3? Sorry, I've looked at so much stuff just to restore this that I can't recall what this is. Where is the yellow tip box? Under "tutorials"?

No problem. It's on the first page of this tutorial. :)

Tip

If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

Merge did not work for me. After 5 days, 3 different forums, 10+ hours and 20 restarts I'm throwing in the towel and just going to use Winzip, even if it is 6 extra steps. Thanks again. Paul

Hello Ghost,

I'm sorry, but .sis, .sis.dm, and .php are not supported to be opened by anything by default in Windows 7. If you needed to unassociate them, them you could use the tutorial below to do so.

File Extension Type - Unassociate

.js and .ini are available in the tutorial if you needed to reset them though.
