I followed the instructions, but the icon I want to find, Crossword Compiler 8 (.ccw), does not appear in the list. And in the explanation of how to associate file type with an icon, .ccw is not listed.

Hello Asqueue, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The .ccw file extension is not listed in this tutorial since Windows 7 does not have a program associated to open it with. You should be able to use the tutorial below to use "Open with" to set that program to open .ccw files with by default.

Open With - Change Default Program

    Hope this helps,

    Shawn,

Thanks for your reply. Crossword Compiler 8 correctly opens when I double-click any .ccw file. What I need is within Windows explorer for the icon associated with the filename to be correct. Right now the icon is randomly assigned whenever I reboot. Sometimes it is the same as the last application I installed. For instance, after I installed Acrobat, the icon that appeared to the left of the filename for any .ccw file was the same as that that appeared with Acrobat files.

I also attempted to use a customized icon. There's a Windows 7 Forums tutorial on how to do that. I did a screen capture of the Crossword Compiler logo, and saved it as a bitmap file (with Paint) renamed to ccw.ico and saved as 256x256 pixels. I modified the registry per the explanation in the tutorial. When I view this graphic with Paint or MS Photo Viewer, it looks right, but when I associate it with .ccw files, the icon appears in the list as a solid black square. On top of which, that association only lasts until the next time I reboot.

So I'm back to square one.

    Asqueue,

If the exe file for Crossword Compiler 8 has the correct icon, then you should be able to use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to select that exe file, then select the icon in it that you wanted to use.

Brink, thank you. I used option 2 to manually specify where to find the icon. And then where it says under option 1 to extract filetypesman.exe, I did so. I executed that, found the .ccw file type, double-clicked on it, and then made sure the proper icon was in the place pointed to in the Default Icon field. The icon I had created didn't work there, but I got a replacement from the program's creator and put it in the same place. Things are fine now. And I know where to come in the future when I have OS problems that can't be easily resolved.

    This is a good forum.
