    flv files

When I click on a .flv file, it tries to open with Windows Media Player, but WMP can't play it. I have to open it wity Real Player. Can you make it default to Real Player? Thanks

Hello alawson, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You should be able to use step 3 in the tutorial below with "Open with" to select Real Player as your default program. Be sure to check the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file box. :)

Actually, I've already changed the default for mine. However, I just thought since it was causing an error when WMP tried to open it, there might be a registry default problem. Thanks

No worries. WMP just doesn't support opening .flv files, so it's normal to get the "can't play" error from WMP. :)

Restore all associations at the same time?

    Hi Shawn
Thank you for the tutorial. Is there a way to restore all the file associations all together or do I have to do them one by one? I want to try this because I can't open files by doubleclicking but I don't know which file associations are messed up so I will have to restore every file.

Just FYI, I think I started the mess by downloading Iranview and VLC media and associating most files to them. I have since removed Ifranview but it hasn't helped and restoring the computer to a restore point isn't an option.

    Hello Panks,

You could click on the Download button in the blue note box to download a ZIP file that contains all the downloads in one, but you would still have to merge them each one by one.

If you like, you can have Windows set to show known file extensions to see what they are to narrow it down.
If this is happening with shortcuts, then it would be for the .lnk (LNK) file extension.

Hope this helps for now. :)

    Default file type associations: Restore

I had a problem with my computer going into a loop when trying to open exe files. After several days, many hours of trying things and even calling microsoft technical support I finally stumbled upon a post on another site that directed me here. The tutorial posted by BRINK fixed me right up. But how did the computer get out of default? If it is something I did I would like to know so I won't do it again.

Hello RX, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Usually this is caused by using "Open with" and choosing to always use the wrong default program by mistake.

It could also be anything that affects file associations.

    Hope this helps some, :)
