    FYI, this worked for me on Windows 7 for the .bat extension. It broke on a Windows Update (???), but this fixed it. Thanks for the solution. It was for my backups scripts which I was in dire need of to get working again.

    Thanks again for these files! However can you add for "Unknown" files? This is
    the key

    Code:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown

    Hey Shawn,

    "Helped" on a thread where files without extensions would try to execute.
    Suggested .exe; .lnk; and Unknown - no change

    The member posted that they found and removed the following key, and the issue was resolved.
    I checked my machine, but the root class wasn't there, apparently it's associated with EA games

    Here's what they found:
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Type]
    "PreviewTitle"="prop:System.Game.RichSaveName;System.Game.RichApplicationName"
    "PreviewDetails"="prop:System.Game.RichLevel;System.DateChanged;System.Game.RichComment;System.Displ ayName;System.DisplayType"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Type\Shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Type\Shell\Open]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Type\Shell\Open\Command]
    @="E:\\GAMES\\Origin Games\\Mass Effect 2\\MassEffect2Launcher.exe "

    I don't know if you want to include a Type reg file

    Here's a remove Type class, not a restore default
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    ; https://www.sevenforums.com

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Type]

    Hey Bill,

    Thank you. Not sure how that affected the other file extensions either.

    I'll get it added now to restore blank file extension types.

    To be clear, it is not ".unknown" as you have put, but "unknown". Example

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\unknown

    No worries. It's "Unknown" without the dot in the tutorial's download. :)

    Hello Shawn my partners laptop has gone crazy when she tried opening Pictures it asked how she wanted to open them and she picked Word and now all icons and programs have Word icons.
    When I click on them it opens a Word program and then a smaller window with what looks like gobbledegook language in it.
    I cannot even get to system restore as even it opens with Word is there an easy way around this??
