This fixed my problem. I merged the CHM registry file and now everything works, after sever hours of "<filename>.chm file is not a Windows help file, or the file is corrupted..." Not even the microsoft website was able to help me. Thanks so much!
Hello Shawn, I'm going to add my thanks to all the previous ones, I had associated .lnk files to open with Notepad++
I had a look at the reg file for lnk files, and since I have a load of context menu items I didn't want to remove them all. eventually (before coming here i searched the registry for lnk) after trying out different things and after looking at your reg file, I found the
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk]
key had UserChoice and OpenWithList subkeys wich weren't listed in your reg file, after deleting these keys shortcuts now open the linked file again
Only problem is now they still have the notepad++ icon (all shortcuts), and this program (which I really suggest you have a look at, it's awesome) doesn't seem to be able to help:

I'm sorry, but Windows doesn't have an association for .py file types by default. What were you wanting it to open with?
If you like, you could use either option below to set a default program for .py files.
Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol
Open With - Change Default Program

It is a program called pytivo and I want it to run as an executable. There is a config file along with it and when I was editing that I must have somehow associated all files with a .py to open in word pad. I can't figure out how to break that association and make the file run like it should.

If you like download and merge the .reg file below, then restart the computer afterwards. It will remove the association you set for it by mistake. :)
Ok that seems to change the registry. However in the "choose a program" to open this file window in the control panel it is still trying to use notepad so it changes the registry back every time I try to execute it.
Are you able to select or browse to and select the program that you want to open it with instead?

I must be getting something wrong and I feel a bit like an idiot but I just want the .py file to execute so I'm not really sure what the option is for that.
