Thank you. I was wondering something about the .mp3 and .m4a files. Maybe it's a stupid question, I don't know ! lol. So here it is :

I have taken a look at the .reg scripts provided on page 1. They are quite complex (lots of stuff I don't understand at all), and they seem to associate everything with WMP11, which I suppose is W7's default. OK.

Given that I won't use WMP (not now, not ever) and that my default player will be foobar2000, is there some .reg script that would just "undo" everything that the page 1 .reg scripts do ? Like "cleaning" everything up ? (maybe it's stupid, I don't know, just asking :) )

I'm asking this because your "unassociate_flac.reg" script in your previous post i n this page looks way shorter/easier. So I was wondering if I could create two similar "unassociate_mp3.reg" and "unassociate_m4a.reg" scripts, just by replacing "flac" by "mp3" or "m4a" in the script ?

The final idea being to :

    • Step 1 : clean everything up as much as possible (unassociate everything : flac, mp3, m4a). No WMP11 references nowhere, etc.
    • Step 2 : associate everything manually (flac, mp3, m4a)

Bonus question : how to get rid of the two "Add to WMP playlist" and "Play with WMP" context menu entries that still appear all the time, even if the file is already associated with foobar2000 ? Thanks again.

    Jose,

If you haven't already, you might see if you could either set Foobar as the default program, or...

Default Programs - Set a Program's Default Associations

... set the file extensions to open with Foobar.

Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol

Open With - Change Default Program

Brink, I have already done all that, and it works.
My mp3, m4a and flac files open in foobar when I click on them, so that's not the problem here.
My problem is me trying to get things right in this other topic ( Big file associations problem ). Hence my previous question, even if it may seem stupid.
Plus my bonus question of course (any hints on that ? ).

I'm not sure about the bonus question, but that would be good to post in a new thread to see if someone may.

I just removed the whole WMP from Windows via the Control Panel. Problem solved.
(well, at least my bonus question is solved, that's what I meant)

    file associations

thank you, this worked perfectly and I almost gave up. whoever posted this, you got much love and respect coming from here,I accidentally change what opened one kind of file , then a couple, fixed one, back and fourth, till only mp3,and one I E page I saved worked . this saved me from either reinstalling windows and losing all the paid stuff since saving it like it was seems risky when put on a new installation , or paying for costly software I can not afford , this was fast , easy ,and not frustrating like blogs on ms.com.thanks again ,I hope I can return the favor somehow.
