How to Change the Number of Windows Displayed in Flip 3D

information   Information
This will show you how to change the number of windows displayed when Windows Flip 3D is activated.

This is a useful tip for those of you that have low-end graphics cards and still would like to use the Flip3D feature.
Note   Note
Keyboard Shortcut Keys for Flip 3D

NOTE: Press the key combinations below in blue to activate.
  • Windows Key + Tab = Press and hold Windows Key, then press Tab (or roll mouse scroll wheel) to scroll through the open windows. Choose the open window you want by releasing the Windows Key when the window is at the front.
  • Ctrl + Windows Key + Tab = Scroll through the open windows by pressing the Tab key, arrow keys, or roll the mouse scroll wheel. Click on the window you want to see, or press Enter when it is up front.

The following is a registry hack which lets you change the number of windows shown when Flip3D is activated. By default it's set to 10, and for some, that'd be too many and the quality of Flip3D would be poor.
He's how to change the registry to a lower number of windows;

1. Press WinKey

2. Type 'regedit'

3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM

4. Right click on DWM and select New, click on DWORD

5. Name the new DWORD value “Max3DWindows” (without the quotes)

6. Double click on the DWORD value and set it to the maximum number of windows you want displayed in Flip3D.
NOTE: A good number is 5 for low-end cards and 10 for high performance cards.

7. Click OK and exit the Registry Editor.

8. Press WinKey+Tab to display Flip3D or download Winflog to launch it via the middle mouse button. You should now see the number of windows you specified in regedit!

Thank you! As well for winflog. I own a wireless laser MS notebook mice and it does the job of winflog. But I have another one aswell (lite) that doesn't do it! Thanks again!

"Max3DWindows" set at 5 doesn't work for me... When i open 10 windows it is still 10 in Flip3D!!

Winflog doesn't work as well... i think it is my mice!

Good morning,

How do we exclude the deskop window from displaying within the window switcher by editing the registry please?
Windows switcher is nice but it is not esthetical at all while displaying the desktop with many else windows like browser windows anyone could have to work with, in case you understand what anyone windows 7 user is trying or would like to achieve ".

You can add Shift + Tab to this list.

And if you decide after flipping through the windows that you want to stay on your original window, just hit Esc.

The original Tutorial here is dated almost 3 years ago. There may be some changes in the system since then that affect it. For example, I often have 10 icons on the Taskbar but with multiple choices collapsed under some of them, the total number of windows I've got going on my system is larger than 10. Yet the Flip3D task switcher shows them all. Same thing if I actually have more than 10 icons on the Taskbar. It shows them all. I looked up the Key you mention above in the Tutorial & I do not have the DWORD Max3DWindows there. Which is fine, since I don't want to limit Flip3D. Just wondering.

Also, when there are more than 10 icons on the Taskbar, is there any way to use the keyboard shortcuts like Windows+<digit> & Windows+Alt+<digit> for the eleventh & higher icons? I fear the answer is we're stuck with mousing the higher ones. I suppose if there's some icons past the tenth one that you use more often, you can drag them left so they're below 10. Unfortunately, you're going to always have some left out in the cold. Do I have that right?

64-bit Windows 10 Pro

Hello Willy,

If you have 20 windows opened, then you will still see all 20 while cycling (flipping) through the windows in Flip3D. It's just that by default, it will only show 10 all at once before having to cycle through them to see the reset.

Sorry, but the taskbar icons keyboard shortcut only works for the first 10 icons. You are able to drag the taskbar icons into any order you like though to be able to have your most used icons in the first 10 spots.

Hope this helps,

Oh . . . I get it. It limits how many it displays in the waterfall of windows. It doesn't limit which ones you can navigate to. So there's only 5 (or whatever you set in the Registry) that are visible at any time, but as you cycle through, invisible ones become visible, and visible ones drop out of sight until you cycle far enough through the list, at which point they reappear. Interesting.

OK. Glad you explained it. It helps me decide I am not interested in messing with this. I like the way it works now.
