[Returning to my PC after a short holiday]
    * With the Mail icon not on the taskbar, I deleted the registry folder Auxiliary Pins, then deleted the registry folder TaskBand. I then retarted Explorer. The Mail icon returned, and all the Registry items were all back, including FavoritesResolve.
    * I then removed the Mail icon by right-clicking, and restarted Explorer. The Mail icon did not return, and the FavoritesResolve item was missing.

It's all beyond me now, I'm afraid. I assume that M$ wants to advertise it Mail app, and is making it return by some hidden process.
