The defragger organizes your HD's while a boot time defrag is able to organize System files as well, which would be running otherwise if defragged from the OS.

I have only defragged OS HD's and not data drives. Someone else will need to advise you on the efficacy of that.

If there are file system problems then run a full Disk Check.

If problems persist test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

    The tutorial didn't work

This tutorial didn't work for me.

When I put the key from the bottom of my laptop in it says it isn't valid.
I tried the robo phone method. After I entered my code it said there had been an error. It then put me on to a Microsoft rep who told me to go to the manufacturer (gigabyte) and ask them for their special OEM version (presumably with all the bloatware included).

I downloaded the iso Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with media refresh as was suggested. However, my key is for the OEM version so it didn't work, right?

But if everyone else's OEM keys worked with the retail version iso why doesn't mine?

I would have a closer look at that key, this usually ends up being an incorrect character being input.

The letter B looks a lot like the number 8, etc.

A magnifying glass may help to double check the characters closely.

    My apologies.

I did have the key wrong. I had checked it a couple of times before, but I failed to notice that two numbers were switched around. :s

Thank you derekimo for setting me straight. :)

    And thank you Gregrocker.
    Great tutorial!

    whew, lots of data

    Followed most and decided to:
Leave my laptop with the mangled COA on bottom with HP for time being.

DESKTOP: found sticker and can read it.
So here is something probably covered but still trying to understand. I am having data overload.

    1. FORMAT primary partition that has OS but keep the HP system/recovery partition so can go back if needed..
    2. Do clean install of OEM OS per your instructions.

    3. Is it going to ask me for my key? Assume so but from what I read in research, The 25 digit COA from sticker will not work or were they talking about the 'jellybean' number? Or, because Hp used their own KEYS due to mass production loads.

So, you are saying the 25 digit KEY from the SOA sticker on my desktop is the correct one?
If so, will I have to contact Microsoft to get activated?

Then a full week of reloading programs and customization, BUMMER.

    Thanks.

The key on COA sticker always works if you've installed the licensed version. If it's rejected it's always because an incorrect character (8 instead of B, etc) is inputted.

Try leaving the key blank during install then inserting it afterwards.

Thank you for the comment. The steps are based on helping with tens of thousands of these installs here since before Win7 was even released. It also helps that this is the top tech forums on the web with more Win7 traffic than all the others put together.
