Thanks for the reply gregrocker, Not sure how to confirm the size but my downloaded X17-58997.iso is 3,243,070Kb and in the Firefox download window it says 3.1GB. I downloaded HashTab and I can use it on the downloaded file but what am I comparing it with?

Interestingly after a Bios reset the install proceeded to expand 100% of the files and then stopped, trying the Bios reset again produced an I/O error before the install had proceeded very far at all. I think this suggests that the DVD may be 'on the blink'

    Cheers

Try writing installer ISO to flash stick with tool in Step 2. Boot stick under USB, Removable or HD's on one-time BIOS Boot Menu key.

If it fails again unplug DVD drive.

    Try another DVD drive.

Test your HD using HD maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, then Disk Check from installer Command Line.

I tried burning the ISO with ImgBurn but the verify failed at about 89%.
I then wrote the ISO to a USB Stick as per your instructions and thought I was home and hosed but sadly no, after the unpacking reached 100% it goes to a blank screen with a flashing cursor.
Will try your other suggestions and report back.

    Thanks for your help

As alternatives try writing stick with Universal USB Installer
or UltraISO Software To Create Bootable USB Flash Drive.

Confirm the ISO hash using HashTab... is the coolest thing ever! with the official HASH posted under Details here: MSDN Subscriber Downloads

    Okay,
Confirmed the Hash Tag so I know the ISO I have is correct.

Using UltraISO Software I created bootable USB, removed the DVD unit from the laptop and booted from the stick, everything goes fine until the completion of the screen where files are expanded, updates installed etc, then blank screen with cursor flashing in top left corner.

The HDD I am using was purchased new this week (Toshiba 750GB MQ01ABD075) the only toshiba HDD Diagnostic I could find related to Fujitsu Branded Toshiba Drives.

I had a look at Universal USB Installer but it is for Linux OS or am I missing something here?

    Where I am at now.
    1) Removed the HDD and attach to XP Machine to run CHDSK also will use Acronis
Disc Director to wipe the drive and partition it again
    2) Format the USB Stick and create again with UltraISO
    3) I do not have another DVD that will fit the toshiba satellite so I will just leave the DVD player out.

    Couple of Questions
    1) I am creating the USB on my XP Desktop, could that be a problem, do I need to create it on a Win7 machine?
2)My USB Stick is only 4GB, should I be using a bigger one (I don't get any messages about lack of space)

    Cheers and thanks for persevering

    Hi,

The Linux isn't an issue - thats what enables it to boot. Using XP to create it is fine as far as I know. 4GB is fine - no problem.

Ok, I have downloaded Universal USB Installer and am now downloading the linux ISO. I'm a bit out of my depth here so please excuse me, my understanding is that this will create a bootable USB that will install the linux OS, How do I go about installing Win7?

    RE: my last post
I created the USB stick (using UltraISO) and put the original HD back in the laptop, during the install I got a message that Win couldn't be installed to the selected partition because it was about to fail but I continued anyway, this time I got further than before. The final screen was a countdown to a restart when the countdown got to 0 the screen went blank with the cursor blinking top left I let it sit for 10mins before deciding it had hung.

    Cheers

Ok, I now have the Ubuntu OS installed and working,(On the original HDD) still unsure as to how I now go about installing Win7?
Ubuntu has reported some disc errors so I'm convinced this HDD is on the way out (I still have the brand new one)

I think I will strat from scratch and download a new ISO and try again.

I still have the Hidden partition containing the Toshiba Factory restore stuff is this of any help?

    Cheers

    Hi,

OK, just a second.......can you show me the screen for Universal USB Installer you are using? You don't need Ubuntu to install Windows 7 - have we got our wires crossed?

    It should look like this:

I didn't look past any of the Linux stuff.
Have now used it correctly and have Win7 up and running on the laptop, most of the drivers are missing and some of the functionality of the laptop is not working.
I have installed mse and am now connected to windows uodate and downloading the 84 updates required.

Thank both of you for all your help . I think this one is solved!!!

    Cheers
