Yes, I read all of the steps. I've downloaded x17-58996.iSO from the link you provided. Besides the backup data I want to make sure I have all my Windows User settings including my IE favorites. I'm no computer expert by any means but I have a pretty good grasp of the basics.
I can't boot Windows in any mode right now so I'm stuck using the DOS prompt.
IE Favorites are in your User's Favorites folder. That's all you need to reimport into a new install as other AppData settings are a corruption path.
Brilliant tutorial. I'm just clean installing W7 on a friends Toshiba Satellite L670.
Haven't done the activation yet... can you just confirm that using the "media refresh" image that includes SP1 is OK on a pre SP1 OEM system as regards activation ?
Quick update... all went well. Fully updated, no failures (apart from IE8 update that I should have spotted with IE10 being offered as well) and most important, it activated first time online. Yea :)
(I then made an Acronis copy of the totally clean W7 + drivers + updates image)
For what it is worth Mooly I have been with Toshibas for some time now and you will find some Toshiba stuff may creep back in with Windows updates and it is usually the stuff like the touchpad and minor stuff like that - not enough to be concerned about but still there. I think that all manufacturers ie Toshiba still like one to think that are absolutely necessary. All I am saying is if you start to have some issues then a good place to start looking is the update history.
I have had no problems since replacing the hard drives in my machines and use this method or an OEM as frankly I am not a fan of upgrades within the same OS.
In passing one good thing you can do for this machine is back up the registry ASAP and follow this

I've never heard of any factory bloatware coming via Windows Update.
A Display Adapter, USB3 or touchpad driver from Windows Update may have some software that will write Startups in msconfig which is why there's a step in tutorial for weeding these out in both places in msconfig since they are rarely needed - unless you lose a function like touchpad scrolling when you disable that listing, then you can re-enable it if you want that. I recommend a notebook mouse to avoid all that.
If you have other missing functions then tutorial deals with how to import needed software from the OEM, or ask back here But I don't know any like hot keys that Toshiba requires, do you John?
