Alienware follow up question

Hi Brink and the Forum

The thread that wouldn’t die.

The Folder Icons on my daughter’s laptop are broken in Windows Explorer.
See the image below.(Where valid Icon’s appear is where I manually changed them).

She’s running a Dell Laptop, Windows 7 Pro 64bit
We PC Movered her from an old Alienware Laptop so we don’t have a restore point

I tried the regedit with a custom folder icon path for both the 32bit location and the 64 bit location. The issue didn’t go away.

I did notice in the 32bit location there was already a Shell Icons folder with a number of entries.(I had to create a new Shell Icons folder in the 64bit location).I am guessing that they were moved over from the Alienware machine by PCMover.I only changed the value data for 3.See the second image below.

I am tempted to just delete the Shell Icons folders in the 32 bit and 64 bit areas, but wanted to consult you and the forum first.

Thanks!

Hello Pierce, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It appears that a mistake made with the Stardock Iconpackager program may have caused this. Deleting the Shell Icons folder, and restarting the computer may help to undo this unless the program made changes in other locations.

Before you do, be sure to create a restore point in case it causes an issue. This way you could just do a system restore to undo it.

Brink, it totally worked.

In regedit I deleted both the Shell Icons folders (32 and 64 bit areas). Exited and,
Deleted the Thumbnail cache
Rebuilt the Icon cache
Rebooted, and the Icons were fixed.

Thank-you, very much!

Thanks again Brink, all your tutorials are very helpful to me.

Is there anyway to change the folder icon on the windows 7 taskbar also?

Hello McDug,

If you like, you could use Option One in the tutorial below to pin a folder to the taskbar with any icon you like for it.

Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder

If you mean some other folder, then please let me know which one.

The default icon for all folders on the taskbar. I followed this tutorial and it changed the folders in Explorer, but not the taskbar. (I do not want explorer pinned to my taskbar, was hoping to just change the default folder icon there too)

In that case, the tutorial below to change the default folder icons may work better for that.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it, but I decided to leave everything the way it is now, I spent too much time customizing everything.
