Hello Frogstar, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may help first.

If not, then post a screenshot showing the entries at this registry location to see what they are for.

    No problem frogstar,

Start by deleting the number 4 (closed folders) and 5 (open folders) string values in the Shell Icons key. They are most likely interfering with 3 (folder icon).

Afterwards, restart the computer to apply to see if that may help. :)

ok did that still have the same unknown icon in list view it did fix something the folders that show up as unknown in a larger view i can now change icon and click restore icon and it goes back to normal thing i notice is when i do that the default icon in properties changes to unknown but when i exit it shows in explorer as a normal yellow folder icon and if i try to set the icon to the unknown icon it will still display as a yellow folder

Go ahead and ZIP the icon you are using for this and upload it here. I'll take a look at it to see if it may be an issue with the icon.
If it's not a 256x256 "Vista style" icon, then that could be the issue.

Sure you could do that to restore the default icons.

The icons you specify with those numbers in the "Shell Icons" key are what are used instead of the default icons until deleted from "Shell Icons".

Shell Icons won't do it all, work randomly?

    Hi 7Forums,
Lately I've been trying to change my default folder layout,
managed to do this with the tutorial and learned some tricks from iconpackager,
like how to do the live folders as well. Overall, this worked, however, some folders refuse to change,
for reasons I can't figure, I attached some screenshots:
    Screenshot 1 : Regedit Shell Icons 1
    (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer)
    Screenshot 2 : Regedit Shell Icons 2
    (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer)
    Screenshot 3 : My Documents
The folder " Game collector " is a archiving program, of which you might have heard already, contains .gmc, .xml files and a folder (that did change) called "Icons which contains three folders with icons, from which 2 are unchanged. I also have the similar " Movie Collector ", of which the folder did change, but with the icons same story. It's pretty random, since the files types are the same.
Does anyone know what might be the problem?
I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Acer Travelmate Laptop, have I forgotten something in the register?

    Hello audaxferox,

For the live folder icons, you might see if the tutorial below may work better. :)

    Hi Brink,
    Thanks for your fast reply,
checked out the tutorial, basically, the program does the same thing,
but also modifies 5, 6 and 162, however, the problem remains.
Checked the folders again, it's really very random, couldn't find any differences in files,
    amount of files, ...
It's just so odd, like logic just disappeared.
Could some string values perhaps be interfering with each other?
