even though the fix described above didn't work for me, it pointed me in the right direction until I found a solution for why my Win7 repair function couldn't find any image files. Here's what didn't work after my SSD boot disk failed and I re-installed Win7-64 bits, giving it the same computer name that I had originally chosen (win7-64):

* Opening the image files and copying them to C:\ - many open files prevented copying, as noted by someone in the thread

* booting up to WinXP and copying the files; some still wouldn't copy - with error message of "access not permitted" or some such.

* booting up in Linux (Ubuntu 9.04) and copying the files. All files copied to my Win7 boot partition, but still, after booting, my Win7-64 wouldn't open any of the dozens of programs that I had installed during the 4 months since I started using it. Hundreds of hours of my time down the drain? No . . .

After copying the files to C:\, I found that the repair function of the Win7 installation disk suddenly was able to see my images. I chose the latest and, after waiting for it to copy 91,000+ files, I'm now using that OS to write this. Joy!

I still have no idea why it couldn't see those image files previously. No matter - now I'm going to test the free BartPE image creation/recovery program that I've used with such success for several years with WinXP; I presume it will be more reliable than this questionable M$ backup system.

This is a very good tutorial. I just saw it for the first time. Thanks Brink. But it is really unfortunate that MS makes us jump thru all those hoops to look at our data. I now know why I will stick with Macrium.
