Windows 7: Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk

16 Mar 2015   #120

I don't mean "prevent." If the boot in MBR gets infected, then that can go undetected. I had read GPT has the "boot" or whatever it's called stored in multiple places and does a self check and self repair unlike MBR. Anyways GPT was supposed to be more resistant to virus/malware that infect the "boot" sector of a hard drive. In what I had read.

Shawn quick query I had a problem cloning a 250GB 850 Pro to a 500GB 850 EVO. Now I won't go into it but with all manner of advice from the others I even tried making the large drive a GPT disk and it still would not clone (EUFI BIOS).

In desperation I cleaned this new drive and left it unallocated and it still would not clone. In the end I have had to reinstall the whole OS and am now putting my gear back on the drive. So why wouldn't the original small SSD - a GPT disk clone to a GPT empty drive. (Lucky I have an ISO saved form that site in Gregs tutorial or I would be relay stuck as I only have spare Home OEM's)

If I may can I ask you what is meant by a broken pipe in a drive??

64-bit Windows 10 Pro

Hello John,

I suppose it was a Clone Failed - Write failed - 13- Broken pipe type error message?

If so, it basically means that the SSD failed the write operation thereby breaking the "data pipe" between the reading of the old SSD and writing of the new SSD.

Thanks Shawn that's on the money with the error message - I had a rough idea that what it might be but knew you would know exactly.

Not impressed though as that drive cost a fair bit at the time - just after the 850 Pro had come out and I thought have the best in the new gamer laptop.

But anyway I have the larger EVO in and reinstalled a real pain as you know only too well but I suppose one has to expect the odd problem now and then eh?

What did mystify me though was afterwards the new drive was showing bad but it came good after a quick clean on another machine and leaving unallocated

Thanks again for being there mate.

windows 7 professional 64 bit

Hello, i hope you can help me :)... I have a new PC with a 3 TB hard drive and when i try to install my windows 7 professional 64bit i can only use the 2.2TB the other 798GB i cannot use because of the Error "Failed to create a new partition on the selected unsued space(ERROR:0x80042468) I tried option 2 with the commands and it says successfully converted to GPT but i still have the same problem with the allocation. After installing windows i look up version 1 and if i try to extend my partition with the unused 800GB it says that is MBT format and it cannot be larger than 2 TB. Why is that ? do you know a way to convert my HDD to GPT so i can use the whole 3 TB?

Hello ab3e, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

Since the motherboard in your specs supports UEFI, you could clean install 64-bit Windows 7 with UEFI on the 3 TB HDD to have it all used.
