I have a question if I may,

I have Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 4TB HDS724040ALE640 (used as a external HDD to store movies). It is connected to the PC via USB 3.0 external Case with its own power source. However for my Blu Ray Player to see the data I have on it, it needs to be formatted MBR as it won't see GPT.

I understand how to convert to MBR, but when I do, will MBR let me see the entire 4T? I don't want it to be partitioned. I haven't hooked up the drive yet to my PC.

Machine Specs:
Alienware X51 R2
Intel i7-4770 3.40 GHZ
16 GIG or Ram
SSD for OS HD
Windows 7 64bit

Thank you so very much in advance for all that you do here and for any help I can get.

Hello Bonnie, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately, MBR is limited to up to 2TB per partition on a disk. You would need to have at least 2 2TB partitions on the disk to be able use all of the space with MBR.

If you left it as one partition with MBR, then it would only have a 2TB partition with the rest as unallocated.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Shawn,

Thank you ever so kindly for your reply!

Is this statement below false then?
With 512 byte sector and 512 byte emulation a MBR drive has a 2.2TB partition size limit.
With a 4096 byte advanced format drive you can have up to a 16TB partition size.
If your drive is detected as 4096 byte sector then you should be able to have a 4TB partition with MBR.

The reason I ask is because I can validate that the WD My books HDD's are formatted MBR and my Blu Ray Player can see it (and it stated that in the manual)and so does my PC. I just happen to worry about the failure rate of the WD's so I bought the Hitachi Deskstar. The more I read here, I might have to change my purchase to the Ultrastar 7K4000 do to it being a Advanced Formatted HDD.
