Windows 7: Partition or Volume - Create New

Hello MJF,

You could easily extend C: into the unallocated space enough to increase C: to 100GB or whatever using Disk Management. To extend D: into the rest of the unallocated space without converting the disk to a dynamic disk, you would have to use a 3rd party program like Partition Wizard Home Edition to possibly do it since the unallocated space is to the left of D: and not to the right of D: .

You wouldn't be able to create a new partition though since there are already 4 primary partitions. It includes the logical partition as a primary partition.

Yes I meant to mention Partition Wizard. But I think you could then make any number of logical partitions within the primary extended after extending it.
Maybe I misunderstood but I thought the OP was after more partitions rather than just one large primary and this could achieve that aim.

Since the logical partition is to the left of a primary partition instead of at the far right, he would not be able to create multiple logical partitions. I tested it in the same configuration as his, and it gives the same error with already having the 4 primary partition limit. It might be the same in a 3rd party program as well.

I was only recommending the larger partition so that there wouldn't be unallocated space anymore since he wouldn't be able to create a partition with it without having to delete the OEM factory recovery partitions first. Which wouldn't be recommended of course. It's just horrible that these OEMs have the partitions setup like that where their customer is not able to easily create an extra partition if wanted.

Hi Folks,

I got it resolved finally! one of my friends (Mohan) suggested the below. I hope this will be helpful for others.
1) Shrink the C drive.
2) Got an unallocated space of 524 Gig (as above in the screenshot).
3) Cut all the contents from D drive into C making D empty.
4) Delete D partition.
5) Now create logical partitions from C drive.
6) Keep extending the free partition into more logical partitions as you like.

Genius!!!!

The C is still left with 300 Gig though. I was able to create 3 logical partitions of 100gig each, which i wanted to do.

Thanks for your help.

Vitty.

Brink,
I agree OEMs who partition this way aren't helping their customers.
Anyway, I did these tests using Partition Wizard V6 (free).
Screenshots-

Test 1: Starting state
Test 2: Adjust OS partition to "accepatable" size.
Test 3: Use unallocated to make 1 extended partition - 1 logical.
Test 4: Make multiple logicals in the one extended.

Note: PW doesn't green band the extended or colour the logicals lighter blue. Refer to the legend.

Ah, good. I wasn't for sure if it would let it do it or not with the 3rd party program.

Thanks a lot SIW2, Brink and MJF.
I was able to do what i wanted to do through the leads in this forum and a little help from one of my friends.
Finally i was able to create the partitions.

For any one who is interested.
The key is to delete one of the primary partitions (not C), taking backup dvd's before this is recommended .
Then you get a free space.
Then shrink C and you will get the space into this free partition.
Then keep extending this free partition as you need.
No need to use any 3rd party tool. All done from win 7 disk mgmt.

Thanks again.

Yes, you don't need pw to do it.

I was going to do it for you - but you never got back after creating recovery discs.

Best to have your friend help, as he is right there.

Thanks for the update.
