Windows 7: Partition or Volume - Create New

I just clean installed Win7 on a brand new 500GB hard drive. My intention was to create a 100GB C drive for the OS and the rest as D for data storage. Now I know I should have done so during the installation. After I finished all the Windows updates and program downloads, Disk Management only allowed ~230GB for a new partition even though C showed ~450GB free space. Is there still a way to partition as I intended? I don't want to jeopardize the existing system in any way after the trouble I went through with the >200 Windows updates. Thanks for your help.

Hello lc007,

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing the full layout of your disk in Disk Management to see what options you may have.

Please have a look. I only have the 100MB system reserved other than the main drive.

I don't see anything in the screenshot that would be an issue.

Depending on what size you have set for your page file and system protection, those would be allocated on the C: drive and will not be allowed to be used to shrink for a new partition.

Thanks for the reply Brink. Yesterday I tried playing with the system protection settings. Even after I disabled it, disk management still only allowed me to shrink ~230GM for the new partition so I promptly enabled it again. I don't know about the page file settings but reading through the "How to Free Up and Recover Hard Drive Space in Windows 7", I felt I don't want to mess with it either. I guess I'm just surprised that the OS could use so much hidden disk space. Now I'm curious: had I partitioned the C: drive to only 100GB during installation, what would the OS do about the page file and system protection stuff - adjust them to use less space or use D: drive anyway?

The page file would remain on C unless you change it. Then the page file is managed by the system, it'll automatically increase in size as needed.

Hello Brink, I realized that I should have read the other tutorial "Partition or Volume - Shrink" for my problem. I understand now I have to use a third party software such as partition wizard to shrink my C: drive beyond what disk management allowed. Now my question is: should I Create an Image Backup (another of your wonderful tutorials) before or after the partition? Thanks!

I'd wait until afterwards, so that you'll have the latest version.

Shrink Volume - Create Partition Q
I set about creating a new simple volume on a brand new laptop today. You know - they come with one giant C: drive. We want a nice, manageable C: drive for imaging, about 75 - 80GB, but 100 or 125 would do. Ran up against the "fixed files" limit on shrinking the volume - could only claim 225GB...
