Windows 7: Partition or Volume - Create New

Hello again Shawn,

I now have a brand new hard drive (actually I got it last week but I have been testing) and it worked for like 4 days and then... Same error all over again. Reinstalled windows, got it within one day. Then reinstalled again and it worked for a while but it gave the error again 15 minutes ago. I bet this doesn't belong in this topic anymore but now I think it has been my motherboard all along. Happily the motherboard had 2 years warrant and it has been bought somewhere at the beginning of last year. It might be the motherboard because it sometimes freezes in the first screen (press del for BIOS etc.) and the hard drives sometimes disappear.
Advices would be great at the moment.

Devil,

It could be a bad motherboard. If you have not already, check at your motherboard's website to see of there are any newer chipset drivers available for Windows 7. You might also reset to default or double check your BIOS settings to make that they are all correct for your setup as well. It wouldn't hurt to run MemTest86+ at boot to test your RAM just to rule them out as well.

I already ran the memtest86+ and it didn't give any errors. The bios has been reset to default once already. I haven't checked the website in a while. Last time I did there was no drivers for Win 7 but maybe now.

If not, then you might have the motherboard checked.

There was new drivers for the chipset and I'm downloading them right now. Only thing is that it takes a long time since it downloads only 20kB/s -_- I hope that fixes it. The computer has never been used with any other Windows than Win 7. And when I checked last time there was no drivers. So I have never had any drivers for my chipset and since that this might even work.

Hello Adi Adi,

Yes, with them formated you can use Disk Management to shrink the Windows 7 partition (ex: 320 GB HDD) by how much you the 2nd and 3rd partitions to be, then shrink the 2nd partition by how much you want the 3rd partition to be.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Adi Adi,

By default, you can create a maximum of 3 Primary partitions and 1 Extended partition with up to 128 logical volumes in the extended partition on a single hard disk.

I set about creating a new simple volume on a brand new laptop today. You know - they come with one giant C: drive. We want a nice, manageable C: drive for imaging, about 75 - 80GB, but 100 or 125 would do. Ran up against the "fixed files" limit on shrinking the volume - could only claim 225GB...
