I am making progress. Gee, these password overwrite apps do not work! Offline NT Password editor didn't, an old Winternals ERD didn't. I managed to boot off the last drive that worked, then copy my image file back on to my real boot drive. It then booted into WinXP but not Win7. Trying to checkout the BCD with bcdedit, which did work all of a sudden, I wonder why?
Ok, I am back to normal finally! Had to use bcdedit to rewrite what I originally had there. I guess drive snapshot has a bug (which I emailed the author of last week) regarding restoring something in the bootsector. I have used "restore partition structure" and "restore disk signature" but both are still missing something for my dual boot with WinXP and a .vhd Win7.
Last week I tried Drive Shadow Copy and it seemed to work ok but I much prefer Drive Snapshot, it's so small and it mostly just works except here.
So....I guess what I learned is not to have more than one bootable drive connected to a PC at one time or windows can reassign drive letters and do all sorts of things to make it a nightmare to restore.
