Ben,

Is this a .ico file saved after being extracted from the imageres file, or imageres renamed?

If it's a saved .ico file from imageres, then try it with this below to see if it will work then.

<iconReference>%USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Icons\Windows7Icons\Icons\imageres186.ico</iconReference>

If you use the icon for a new shortcut as an example, does it display for it?

Brink,

Thanks for the tutorial. It should be noted that any text/xml editor (like Notepad++) will work fine.

greenlink23,

Do you still have that Downloads icon somewhere? I was going to make my own, but if you already have, I guess I won't need to.

Hello thetoothpick,

Oh yes, any text/xml will work just fine for this. It's just that I usually keep it simple by using what is included with Windows 7. This way the instructions will be the same for all.

Thank you,
Shawn

Hello Kranika,

Sorry, it must be a .ico file. It should be a 256x256 pixel icon for the best icon view size compatibility.

blow me down captain... sheesh... great tutorial, but couldnt MS make this a little easier?... still not 98 days with 30gb hdds as the norm, and only a few shared locations... users have evolved since then, and so have one's hdd capacity and "share level" by now. i wish a little more concentration went to libraries/HG... i feel they are getting cheated. creating your own customized icon for a library folder shouldnt be this difficult to get around to. The more a person can customize his on pc/OS, the more apt a person is going to use it, as long as it works the way they want it or atleast as its advertised to do so. Being handcuffed and limited unless going around the OS to MAKE it do what it wont do naturally or natively, is just ludacris imo. if linux would support more things itself rather than having to run a vm for alot of things, i would go that way, but its the vendors and manufacturers to blame there I'm afraid. But even apple with its popularity, is limited itself. Wish i had the answer.

anyways thanks for the tut again brink, and the icons and direction Grim

You're welcome Digger.

Maybe if Microsoft gets enough feedback on this, they may change it in a update to make it easier to through the GUI instead.

Hi Shawn,

I think the default xml entries have changed just slightly. Here is my default music entry to show as an example next to your original default entries at the beginning of the tutorial.

I've used Word Wrap in Notepad to show everything, but I've highlighted a couple of the slight differences.

Default Music library example:
