Thanks for the tutorial, I was able to create the bootable iso.

Unfortunately, after my installation says it's completed, my computer restarts, I see the Windows 7 screen, and then it turns black. I've let it sit like this (multiple times) for an hour or more.

I was running a clean install on Windows 7 64 bit on a newly formatted partition. I have Vista 32bit installed on a different partition. I've tried taking out my RAM and using only one stick at a time, and attempting to reinstall. Still no good. I don't think anything is faulty on the hardware side, as I've had no trouble with Vista. I've recently run Memtest with no errors.

The only thing I haven't tried is running the installation on my C drive (where Vista 32 currently is). Should I try this? I've avoided doing it since I don't want to install over Vista with the clean install since that would leave me without an OS--and also since it would be a pain to reinstall since I'd have to put XP on my computer, then Vista since i only have the upgrade disc.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Make a backup image of Vista - save the backup image ( preferably on an external drive - another partition will do if you don't have an external).

You can restore that image if you like and be back with Vista exactly as it is now.

In any case - get the free app. - make images of your o/s partitions every now and again. That is the number one rule. Saved my a** a number of times.

which does not have the BIOS problem of booting pure UDF images.
Will not be able to try it on my son's machine until next week,
but I will post results as soon as he is ready for the upgrade.

many thanks to SIW2 (man i totally respect your efforts and patience) and all
was a little daunted by the tutorial, more so by the troubles seemingly experienced by many
anyway read through two days threads took a deep breath and followed the OP tutorial
and guess what.........

ISO burned (after a couple of typo errors and some head scratching on my part)
booted from disc
custom install using advanced options to delete (vista) partition
windows installed (without entering product key....untick auto activate...just click "next")
windows 7 runs as 30 day trial
rebooted from hard drive
entered product key from within W7

not a hitch

to clarify........this install took place on a clean formatted disc with absolutely no issues whatsoever

have just recieved e-mail confirmation of upgrade disc being shipped and bank a/c being charged
it's a good thing no-one was in a hurry to get this.........
