Just wanted to add my thanks to the chorus of approval for SIW2. I bought the downloaded version of Win 7 Pro x64, and after a lot of headscratching finally got it installed in VMWare Fusion on my Mac. Like most people here, the problem is getting it to authorise the product key, and this is even more difficult in a VM, as I couldn't update an existing XP VM. The trick is to connect a USB drive with XP installed, so it shows up in the 'where to install' part of the installer. Though you're clean installing on a fresh VM HD, it accepts a USB-attached XP install as upgradeable. This should also work for those people who want to install Win 7 on a blank HD - basically, keep your XP HD attached until the authorisation has gone through. Result!

I haven't seen that error before.

At what point do you get it?

In the expandedsetup folder is another folder called boot. Look in there and make sure you have etfsboot.com file.

There have been sporadic reports of corrupt downloads/extractions and no etfsboot.com.

Thanks in advance for your help. Ive followed your vlite 1.1.6 suggestion and followed the steps from your post, but it's not working for me.

I get an error "9216" and it fails.

    ..still stuck, I'm clueless.

You are having trouble running a 64 bit setup.exe on a 32 bit operating system.

If you have the expandedsetup folder on your desktop - - make a bootable .iso, then burn to dvd, or make a bootable flash drive.

The easiest way - very very easy and free is to use vlite 1.1.6 to make and burn the bootable .iso for you.

    Hi all,

Thank you very much for the easy to follow guide.

Just to confirm everyone has done it correctly:

    ISO size = 2,523,011,072 bytes

    On Disk = 2,523,013,120 bytes

    For XP users:

    Oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" –h "C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

Replace [Users] with [Documents and Settings], everything else stays the same.

Remember to enter your user name and still assuming the extracted files on on your desktop.

I had a successful dual boot install. I created a DVD via instructions and was able to boot off the DVD and install Win7 on a different partition.

FYI the installation seemed to hang at 0% for 10 minutes, and then started working, so give it time!

No problems with entering the product key, it worked immediately. So now I am running Vista Business 32-bit and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Thanks for this guide. I had downloaded Windows 7 for my daughter's laptop and I hate upgrades.

    USB device boot

I used the WinToFlash program suggested on this website

How to Make the Student Discounted Windows 7 Upgrade Bootable | Notebooks.com

to create a bootable usb and it seems to have cleared up the freezing problem I was having earlier.

Also, by using this program you don't have to download and install the utility and create an ISO in the command line.

For those who want a bootable flash drive, you can use the tutorial here:

It is also linked at the bottom of this tutorial at the beginning of this thread under Related links.
