Make bootable iso from student d/l

the exp folder size is 2.21GB, on disc 2.21GB.

Is there any way of testing my bootable iso disc before I format the hard drive?

For some reason, only Audio's syntax worked for my from the Windows 7 Enterprise trial. I haven't had a chance to test it, but could it be something as silly as not including the .exe at the end of oscdimg? Because that's one of the only differences I see.. and the lack of quotations. Either way it worked, so I'm happy.

Just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial. We got shafted with a non-iso download and I was beyond annoyed when I found that out. I would have added the optional mail-to-you disc for $13 or whatever if had they been explicit. Oh well, thanks again.

But I am concerned that my key may not verify if I do a clean install. I do not want to run in install circles

There have been other people throughout this thread that have posted how many files are in that folder and what the size is. It conflicts a bit because people didn't necessarily say whether they had home premium, pro, 32 or 64-bit. So hunt back and see what you find. You can always try your disc out and easily stop the installation before it starts asking you questions that might potentially start wiping out partitions.

- My case: Custom installation from Vista Home Basic 32 to Windows 7 Pro 64

- Result: Working with no problems

- My steps:

1) Following the instruction of the first post until the last step of burning the ISO, instead, I used Microsoft DVD/USB download tool to burn the DVD.

2) Boot from the DVD that's created, choose Custom Installation (didn't bother to try the upgrade option), used advance option to format C: and installed at that drive.

3) Continue the installation, didn't see product key screen nor any input required until after a few rebootings from the hard disk. The product key screen showed up at the end of the installation process. Entered, and a few minutes later, it is completed and worked.

4) I have been using it for a day or so and so far so good. Just I need to change the display language which was told by microsoft web that it is not allowed for Pro. Then I googled a way to use DISM to install the language package downloaded from MS Update site for Ultimate/(Business?) version and then changed the registry key of the installLanguage item to the new language and it worked.

must an image be made for those that plan on performing the in-place upgrades? i'm trying to understand what the actual problem is i.e. what students all around the globe are having so much trouble achieving

If you only have a 32-bit system and you downloaded 64-bit Win7 you must make a bootable DVD since the installer will not run within XP's 32-bit environment.

There are a lot of resons why people want a bootable .iso - to get a bootable dvd/flash drive.

You have a bootable copy, safe and away from your pc. If you can't get into windows and need to reinstall - you can use that (as long as you keep your product key safe). If you just have the files on your HD and you can't get in - what do you do? Also, you can boot it to system recovery options and effect repairs - you don't get that option when you run setup from the files - assuming you can get in at all.
