I know you have been very understanding with people who are having trouble and I need your help one more time.

I am just trying to understand for sure: You can do a clean install from an Upgrade if you get the .ISO made correct? If I read right, that was what I got.

Along with the CMD commands you posted to use, I try and try and I keep getting path cannot not be defined or something like that. Or I get a directory syntax error. I have tried every Command prompt posted for Vista/7 I could find and none of them work.

My user name is Panama Red. Yet in some places it is "Panama Red", in others it is "PanamaRed". I am wondering if spaces in my user name mess it up. When I click on my computer and to properties it shows it as one word. Is that what I go by? In that location? And i have tried it both ways, yet I cannot get it to work. I did put that .exe file in windows32 as well.

As doing a simple upgrade from vista to seven 32bit resulted in many problems (computer running slow, inability to install updates from Windows Update...)
I want to do a repair install by booting from my newly created boot dvd.


Yet I need to be sure that all my programs as well as my files (photos, films, iTunes music folder, random documents…) will still be there when I’m over and done with the repair install. On both C:\ and D:\ drives…
I read in a forum dedicated to Seven that all my drivers will need to be reinstalled, can you please explain? For instance, graphic card, sound, lan connection and video drivers might disappear, is that it?


I have also read that I will have to reinstall of my applications, does that include MS Office 2007? I do not have the install DVD so that might be a problem…
I would also like to add that I have already validated my copy of Seven even though it was not working well (I thought that would enable me to use windows update)


Could that be a problem once I have my Win 7 reinstalled? Will I have to revalidate it? Maybe it isn't possible :S

This explains how to do a repair install - pretty much the same as an Upgrade install.

I don't believe you do it can by booting the dvd.

If you are having problems after doing an in place upgrade - the best solution may be a clean ( custom) install.

You would need to reinstall your programs, get updates, etc.

That could be tricky if you don't have the install media/keys for some of your software.

I finally got it to work...For some reason none of the CMD prompts worked for me. My friend emailed me the one he used and that one just magically worked...I don't think it was posted. But maybe it was. Thanks for your help!

I used this one:


oscdimg -bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\expandedSetup\ C:\7.iso

Sorry, I meant a clean install ! The Upgrade install is a real joke in my opinion, it is running very slow and I can't use win update.

That's why I've created a boot dvd - following the forum's instructions - to launch a clean install from there. Yeh, losing Office 07 will suck big time (my install dvd is nowhere to be found).

What about my ASUS drivers, will they really be erased ? I'm surprised...I thought they might just need an update so as to be compatible with Seven, that's a bummer...

Also, as I have already validated my copy of Win7, do you reckon that could be a problem? Will I be able to ask for a new one over the phone by explaining my case? (I've read that activation could be handled over the phone...)

Hi Olly,

I think you will be able to find the Office key from your HD , before you reinstall.

SIW may do it ( if not, there are several other free apps. you could try).

At least if you have the key , you can find the Office Install media somewhere, borrow it, whatever.

d/L the free Standalone .exe - the second one down on the left on this link:

Rt click and Unblock, then Rt click and run as admin. Click Licenses in the left pane, and it will have a look.




You will be fine to activate the new 7 installation - you can reinstall as often as you like.

I've only managed to find info for 64 bit upgrades so apologies if this question has already been answered.

I'm currently operating Vista Premium Home Edition.

I've just d/l the windows 7 upgrade but have only got the .exe file and not the setup1.box, setup2.box which i have read others have.

All the guides to make an iso mention these files so thought i better not open the exe file before checking.

Ive d/l the oscdimg.exe file and unblocked the exe file.

Any help much appreciated.
