Peter,
When the System Restore failed, that was with running Windows installed on the HD/SSD, right ?
If so, you could try doing a System Restore when booting using a Win 7 Installation or Repair disc.

Windows Home Premium 64- bit(6.1,Build 7600) SP1

I have win 7x64 home premium non SP1 installed. (oem disk purchased to upgrade from xp)
I downloaded an ISO of win 7x64 home premium.
I want to do a repair install.
When I use that I seem to be stuck on down loading updates forever. The green progress bar stays at 1/3 and does not seem to move any further. The mouse cursor is a twirling round circle and the HDD light occasionally comes on.
Should I just let it run over night?

Hello Caramelo,

As long as you have drive activity, it would be best to let it sit until finished. If it hasn't progressed or finished by morning, then yeah there's an issue that may need a clean install instead.

Hi Brink,
Don't know what's gone wrong but I went to the normal win update and it stalls on downloading those also. Says it has 39 to dl but it's always 0% complete. I last successfully installed "some" updates on July 1. I say some because MS network beyond 4.1 won't install.

I've been having increasing problems with my win 7 with updates failing due to certificate problems, startup etc. so I was hoping to do a repair install. Seemed like and ideal way to save my files and settings but....

Windows Update has been having issues lately in Windows 7 that will hopefully be sorted soon by Microsoft.

But without the windows 7 update disk installation update process I won't be able to complete a repair install is that correct?

Nar, you could still do a repair install. Just skip the Go online to get the latest updates for installation option at step 9. You can manually check for updates in Windows Update after the repair install has finished.

Ok, that's good to know. Thanks. I dl a Win7 SP1 ISO from the link on the first page of this thread. Hopefully I won't have trouble with entering the product key of my OEM Win 7. When I tried to get an SP1 ISO from the MS site it would not let me download it and they told me the key was from an OEM and to go see the pc manufacturer. I built it myself

Another question; If I'm unsuccessful in having a repair install fix the problems I'm having is it possible to upgrade the Win 7 to Win 10? Does the install of Win10 depend on a completely healthy win7?

I had the repair install done and almost everything is fine, i have my programs and personal files. i only have 3 problems. my computer is running a little slower than before, i cant download updates it just checks forever and ever and never stops and my internet explorer is 8 now instead of 11. i figure the internet explorer issue is because i cant get the new updates to get ie11. i tried a manual install of a update and that ran forever and ever too.
