Mipset, Im quite certain that you could move all of your documents, pictures, etc to your desktop, zip them and store them on a flash drive to ease your concerns. You should follow Brink's advice, it will work. These folks don't give advice for fun. They take pride in helping folks in need, and they know what they're talking about. Best of luck.

I apologize in advance, because I have not read the whole thread.

Anyways my problem is that I cannot preform repair install. Whenever I run the setup it starts copying files and then gives me no option to install Custom or Upgrade install. It only pops the "Where do you want to install Windows" dialog and if I go on with this it will do a clean install and create a windows.old folder (so it says). I only want to do repair install, not the whole install all over again. Tried with two different Windows 7 disks and I still get no "Upgrade" option.
Btw I have tried running setup from within Windows 7 and on boot. Same story.

That is a strange problem! Only thing I can think is you may be trying to repair a 32bit install with a 64 bit install disc. Seems as if something to this effect is holding you up. Good luck to you with your problem.

Hello Blackadder,

What edition and type of Windows 7 installation discs are they, and what do you currently have installed?

For example: 32-bit or 64-bit, Upgrade or Full, OEM, retail, student, Factory Recovery, etc.....

A repair install can only be done if they are both identical editions and 32/64 bit. A repair installl cannot be done with a factory recovery type installation disc.

Hi,

I've got 64bit ult. edition installed and the disc is also 64bit ultimate. It's full version.

Blackadder,

From what you described, it doesn't sound like it's retail full version of Windows 7. Are you sure it's not something else? Modified or slipstreamed version maybe?

It's full version, yes. I've spent so many hours on google searching for a solution but I haven't found anything. I'm completely clueless on this one.

I admit that I'm stumped as well Blackadder. Since you have a retail 64-bit full Windows 7 Ultimate installed and installation disc, then it should have given you step 9 if done exactly as in the tutorial.

Maybe some part of my Win7 installation is broken/corrupt so the setup won't run properly? I've done sfc /scannow and first time it did find some corrupt files that could not be fixed, but after a day or two I tried again and then SFC was able to fix the allegedly corrupt data. Also, the weird thing is that windows help dialogs pop up blank. There's no contet in the help window and window is completely white, no buttons, text, anything. But that's probably another issue
I'll sure let you know when I find out the solution to this.

Well I managed to solve the problem. I have used yet another disc and it gave me the upgrade option.
I guess my disc is corrupt and the 2nd disc (copied from disc1) was probably burnt with the same corrupt data. All in all I managed to do the upgrade and everything works ok now
