Hello Enzernine, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That was probably the issue with use a retail disc on a OEM installation. Was it a factory or retail OEM installation?

Did the retail installaton disc that you used have SP1 included?
It was a factory install and the retail disc I used did not have SP1 included.

    Enzernine,

That would most likely be the reason why then. If it had been a retail OEM installed, then it might have worked with a normal full/upgrade retail disc.

Hello Robb, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What type (ex: retail, OEM, student, Anytime Upgrade, etc....) of Windows 7 is on the DVD and currently installed?

Student I believe. I am downloading the windows 7 professional sp1 from mydigital life since I heard using their ISO is a potential solution to my problem.

    sounds nice, but doesn't work

I get to step #8 in your tutorial, and get this message:

"Windows 7 Professional cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”."

My problem is that I cannot update Windows 7 SP 1. I have tried it from the Clean Boot so I conclude that the problem is with Windows. Question: Do I buy a retail disk with SP 1 and install the SP 1 through the use of the disk and the above tutorial? Or. Do I buy a retail Disk without SP 1 and repair Windows with the tutorial and then install SP 1 through the update process? Thank you very much.
P.S. Current system is OEM 7 without SP 1.

A retail disc with SP1 that was used to install the current installation works the best to do a repair install with if needed.

Thank you for the welcome. Windows 7 Home Premium 7.6.7600 Build 7600 It came in a bundled set from Sony along with a bunch of other junk. It doesn't have SP 1 on it and it doesn't have any Windows Repair utility. So my goal is to somehow repair the operating system currently installed so that I can get SP 1 installed.
