Ok, I looked at the list and didn't see any conflicts. Hmm.. Just curious, why can't you use a different edition of Windows to do the installation since you are basically re-installing all the files.

You can't use a different edition than what's installed since a repair install is a in-place upgrade to the same edition installed.
Hmm, that's unfortunate. I guess I might just have to re-install completely then. Thanks for the help Brink :)
Nice article.. helped me for some of my issues..

It will. It'll do some restarts and eventually leave you with what looks like a finished job. When you shut down thinking you are all done - - - you ain't. Then when you boot it up again it'll be demanding product keys your antivirus will prolly want to be renewed with the product key etc.
Hello. I just found this thread and maybe someone here could help me out. All of a sudden I am getting a "Not a Genuine Windows" error. It is genuine as it's the original installation from Dell with all the updates. I called Dell who tried some stuff and couldn't remedy the problem (we did the uninstall and reinstall the KB971033 update). Dell then told me to call Microsoft which I did.
The tech at MS, after trying some things that did not work, told me I need to do a repair of Windows 7. He told me that I could not use the Dell reinstall disc but that I could use any Windows 7 retail disc. That agrees with what I have read here.
But he then said I could not use a Windows 7 upgrade disc, even thought it is a retail disc (I have one from another computer).
So now I am confused. Can I use the retail upgrade disc to repair the installation or do I need to hunt down a non-upgrade Windows 7 installation disc? And how much will this screw up what I have on the computer now?
Thanks for any thoughts.
Hello Gator, and welcome to Seven Forums.
I would recommend to create a New Thread in the Windows Updates & Activation forum area instead for this "Not a Genuine Windows" error. I do not think a repair install is going to help you for this.
OK, I will try that. It's just that the MS tech told me they were going to do a repair if I could find a disc to use.
I'm not sure if they meant a repair install or not when they said "repair", but I would see what we could do about the genuine/activation issue first.
