Repair Install

Hi Brink.
I downloaded the correct ISO and started the repair install at 07:00 this morning. I've just finished the final setup, graphics driver etc 5 hours later. Windows now seems to have regained its former performance. More importantly the System Restore and Back up functions which I've been trying to fix for days are now working again.

Hey all,
Following up after using this procedure again and running into a separate hurdle!
I upgraded my media centers mainboard (ram & cpu)
Following this tutorial but swapping the drive over at the first reboot (as in my post #945 (page 95))
every driver installed successfully except my "Intel HD Graphics" driver did not, coming up with the 'Code 12 This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use'
After almost exhausting myself trying different things over 12 or so hours I finally found a fix to the problem.
Following this small guide Device Manager : Hidden Devices I removed every driver possible (making sure after 3 attempts not to remove the usb drivers that controlled the keyboard and mouse *sigh*) and upon reboot installed the graphics driver first
Problem Fixed!
Hope this helps someone else in the same situation, but i assume its fairly uncommon

I have had a problem with the hard drive on my laptop. I replaced the hard drive and did a recovery using Total Recovery Pro 9 from the back up files I had created on an external hard drive. System boots and runs! Of course I have inherited the errors that were creeping in from the errors on the old hard drive. There are some features that have stopped working including Live Mail and Windows update. I also ran sfc/scannow which indicated some problems which it could not fix, generating a large log file. Wishing to maintain my programs and data I have tried twice to do the repair install as outlined at the beginning of this thread, I get most of the way through and then encounter the rollback and message: "This version of Windows could not be installed. Your previous version of Windows has been restored. Before trying to install this version of Windows again, check online to see if it is compatible with your computer. Go to the Microsoft Website... ... and search for "upgrade adviser"". I have gone through the steps and run the upgrade adviser which does list two programs that might have issues a version of Adobe Acrobat and Wild Tangent games needing a paid subscription. I had not deleted these two programs and will try doing that. I was trying to do an upgrade install using the Windows 7 SP1 ISO file I had downloaded from the website and burned on a dvd.

Any thoughts as to how to proceed?

Well I followed your instructions, downloaded the exact file from the Dell site (the one I used before came from sevenforums.com), I uninstalled Norton 360, restarted the laptop and followed the instructions at the beginning of this thread. When it got near the end of installation (had already restarted a couple of times) the following error message was displayed "Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware" disappointing since it was running though not perfectly, no problems in Device Manager, and the upgrade adviser said the hardware and programs were compatible.
Then the computer restarted and rolled back to the existing Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 state.
There may a partition on the hard drive with Toshiba's factory installation, though I don't know if it was damaged at all, it should have been copied over when I did the TotalRecovery Pro 9 restore from the original hard drive.

Any thoughts as to how best to proceed? Your input is appreciated...
