The day I switched over from XP to 7, I always missed the "Repair" option that XP gave in its text based setup. I remember, I posted on several forums seeking help on how to "repair" Windows 7, it's a shame that, today, ie, 15 Apr 2013, after even Windows 8 rolled out, I got to know that Windows 7 CAN be repaired. Awesome tutorial. :)

This is a very good post - I appreciate it. Mostly I do either system Restore or In-Place install from the Desktop.

Yesterday, Malwarebytes released an update that rendered about 15 Windows 7 machines I maintain wholly unbootable, I was able to fix all of them save one, which had no restore points. There was really nothing I could do - Even Windows 8's Black Screen of Death allows you to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del "Three Fingered Salute" to pull up the Task Manager and you can re-run Setup from there. But windows 7 cannot be fixed that way.

So - My question is, is there ANY version of the Windows 7 Install disk, x86 and x64, SP1 and No SP1 - That can do the in-place install from BOOT?

This is the big problem with Windows 7, XP is easily repaired from the Install Disk, but Windows 7, it appears that an In-Place install can only be performed from the Desktop.

    Hello Jonny,

Unfortunately, it is true that a repair install can only be done from inside Windows 7.

Do you have a system image available to restore?

If you like, you could use either tutorial below to copy any needed files from the PC before reinstalling.
    Hope this helps some, :)

Couldn't you even boot into Safe Mode? Malwarebytes is totally functional in that mode and you could then undo whatever MBAM removed. Assuming the quarantine hadn't already been emptied manually. I use MBAM and haven't seen anything like that happening. But the difference maybe that I don't use the "Pro" aspect of it as I already have A/V active.

    Hello Maul,

Unfortunately, you can only do a repair install from within Windows. It cannot be done using any other method.

You might see if this below may be able to help with the stop error 0x0000007b though.

Error message occurs after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive

    Hope this helps, :)
