Just to add post 1990, that's almost as long as this thread has been up, I have nothing to add.
OK, so it's only been 7 years. Almost gone are the days of just overwriting OS with some minor
unintentional changes in some settings but still better than a factory reset. Backups anyone?

in case of clean install yes, but if I want to do "repair install" I need same language version. Now I know it, because I have one Windows 7 Professional DVD but it is a english version and when I try upgrade from mine Home Premium CZ, I recieve an error about language versions.

I have valid serial number for that English W7 Pro, but I do not want to do clean install because I do not want to loose all my installed software
    Hi George,

It is not clear. What installation media do you want?

Do you want Windows 7 Professional x64 Cz?

OR do you want Windows 7 HomePremium x64 Cz?

    Hi,

It looks like for repair install I have to have exactly the same edition of installation media as I have installed on my notebook. So I need Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 cz

Correct. Please also see the red warning box at the top of the tutorial for other requirements.

OK, after deep searching I've found correct media and after couple of unsuccessful tries (due to graphis card drivers) I was able to do successful repair install

    thanks

Wow, what a thread (should be more like a steel cable by now...)

In a bit of a pickle. I am travelling overseas and Win 7 has gone wonky. I have Win 7 Pro x64 installed and the SP1 update applied. I can only get a hold of an original Win 7 Pro x64 DVD without SP1.

To do the in-place repair, should I uninstall the SP1 update, do the in-place repair and then reinstall SP1? From what I read I can't use the Win 7 original DVD to in-place repair the Win 7 x64 SP1 install.

    Is this correct?

    Humbly appreciative of everyone's help

Hello Tim, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

I'm afraid just uninstalling SP1 wouldn't help since there have been many updates since then, and the ISO would still not be as current as the installed Windows 7.

If you like, you might consider to post a new thread about your issue making Windows 7 to go wonky to see if we may be able to help with that.

Hey Brink, thanks for that. So I guess I'll try to find an MS original WIN7 Pro x64 SP1 disc.

I ordered a set of HP Recovery discs and when I get my hands on those, I'll see if they'll work for a reinstall.

Actually with my Win 7, I won't open a new thread. There's just all sorts of things - Corel X5 and PhotoShop CS5 have weird issues, my USB subsystem just stops "working" during the day (until I reboot), Bluetooth drops off now and again. Although the laptop is an HP Elitebook 8770W workstation, I am not as happy with it as my older 8560W (the 8560W is rock solid - except for a slight heating issue).

I'll see what I can do on the SP1 version or just grit my teeth until the HP discs arrive.

    Cheers,
    Tim

I have Windows 7 Home Premium x86 on a Compaq SR1710nx Seagate 250 gig H/D with 4 gig's of memory, the disk I used I got from some friends at a computer repair store that has 4 different installs on it. I did a clean install and was connected to interent, found it had a few issue's, I have the act numbers but I haven't done that yet ,I don't want to burn the numbers if this computer can't be fixed. So I tried the repair install and it went for a day looking for upate install files, I read post 1002 that the person was having same issue. Is there a fix without having to do clean install. I went the link for d/ling a copy of windows and it ask's for the numbers and wanted to know if I put the numbers in will that use them up.It wouldn't update so I ran the MS fix it tool for update's it fixed 4 issue's but one it wouldn't fix , it did update finaly but a few have failed I don't know to fix that. another issue is it will read a cd dvd but it won't burn a disc i have a program isoburn, It has a lot of others but thought that if I fixed one at a time it might fix others, I looked for install updates to see if I could D/L them but I didn't find them. Also was going to try and copy and burn just the Win 7 HP see if that would help ... Sorry for the Long post First time here in a long time Thank you
