Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore

It wasn't a shortcut anymore, but still pointed to the same program, and read the same files to do so. I can't get it for a Computer icon, but that was it. A lot more simple than a utility or reg editing in my opinion.

You are only copying the .exe file to the desktop, so this wouldn't be a shortcut. It is also not recommended to do this since most programs will not run like this. Most programs will have other files in it's C:\Program Files folder that are needed to be in the same location as the exe file for the program to run, and runing the .exe file by itself like that on the desktop will not always work.

If they are standalone .exe files, then that would work just fine. However, if it's a .exe file for a installed 3rd party program, it most likely will not work. For example, Firefox.

This is because when the program is installed, the registry entries for it all point to where the program was installed to (ex: C:\Program Files). If you run the actual .exe file from the desktop, then the other files it needs from the installed location (ex: C:\Program Files) cannot be found and thus the program does not run or gives a error. This is why a shortcut is used instead since a shortcut will run the .exe from it's installed location.

Hi, I'm getting this error and if I used any third party application to remove the shortcut, the shortcut icon replace by other icon. See the image below. I also tried to rebulid the icon cache.

Hello Anu,

Rebuilding the icon cache will not help with this issue since it's a shortcut arrow overlay issue on the icon instead of the actual icon. You should be able to use OPTION ONE to either restore the default arrow overlay, or what you like.
