    Got it, finally

I got it working normally now. Apparently I needed to go to the view tab, then arrange by, then select folder. I'm not sure what it means, but now I get the menu options people were talking about, and the annoying day titles are gone!

Thank you for your help! I'm sure I'll have other boneheaded questions in the future, so I'm bookmarking this forum. I really appreciate it.

Hey guys. On PC 2 have a flash drive with alphabetical groups but on this new PC 1 can't seem to create that desirable setting for the same f-drive.

How did I do it b4? Anybody got an idea? Thanks Jim

    Hi James,

Yes I believe that's right, but I don't understand what you mean by "on the right" mine's upper left:
File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by-jim1.png

Did you mean the "change your view - more options" button on the right?
File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by-jim2.png

While the flash drive is open and you're looking at its contents or even if it's empty try right clicking on an area away from the files or any area if it's empty, do you see Name in Group By now?

    Here's mine:

If you don't your Folder view may need to be reset: Folder View - Reset All Folders do this while your flash drive is still in and active.

Is PC-1 a brand new OEM machine or is it a refurbished one, I ask because it would be harder to believe a new PC would need a folder reset, but stranger things have happened.

    Related:
@Brink does have an older version of Folder View - Reset here: https://How to Reset Windows Explorer Folder View Settings to Make Vista Remember | www.vistax64.com/tutorials Where you might be able to check your registry settings but since its been 9years since its publication only he could tell you if it would be relevant to win7's registry.

Thanks guys, but your not in a flash drive environment so its different. (BTW when I said "right" it was as in "correct")

I did figure it out, so for the benefit of others below is a Here is how:

Open the flash drive with all saved files showing.

Go to the “organize” dropdown downwards arrow & open.

You'll see an option called “layout” with an option for “MenuBar”.

Click both and you will then see a view option with options for both “group by” & Sort by”. In both click “name” which will also auto setup “ascending” .

You will then have number & alphabetic groups: 0-9, A-H, I-P, Q-Z in a manner just like they are in this Tut for Win7 folders.

Brink, worth the time for a separate Tutorial? Up to you of course.

Thanks for the input guys and this Tut brink. James

I'm glad you got it sorted Jim.

It sounds like you may have just needed to turn on the Menu bar to be able to follow the tutorial.

Yup, once I figured that out, it was down hill from there since all the needed elements were then visible. Smiles & joy. Jim
