The volume serial number (see link for more info) of a hard drive is not the same as the actual serial number on the sticker on the hard drive itself.

I'm not sure why it didn't create the folder for you if it says it did. Did you check the other volumes to make sure it didn't get placed on one of them?

Hi, I have a question regarding chkdsk using method option 1 from 1-10. When the Chkdsk is already started, can we cancel it? The problem is, I started chkdsk using method option 1 and it has been 2 days but it's still only 251 files processed. I doubt it will finish within next few hours and it might take another day to finish the check, so can I cancel it?

Hello Anbu, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, you can safely click on the Cancel button to do so. It may take a while to stop though.

Are you having any issues with the drive? It shouldn't take that long to run chkdsk at all.

    Hi Brink,

Thank you for your reply. I am not quite sure if the drive has any issues. It happened a few days ago when I did backup on my music and I saved them to my external HD because I have to reinstall Windows on my primary HD since it had driver problem which caused BSOD that I couldn't get rid of it. When I finished the Windows installation, I tried to move all my music to my primary HD, but for unknown reason, most of the files can't be played by any players so I tried to use MP3 scan and repair, and it gave me an error said that the files are in unknown format and error so I guess it might be something wrong with my external drive. So I tried to use chkdsk to fix the system errors. It's running very slow and it has been running for 2 days and still only shows 259 files processed. I attached the screen shot.

Yeah, I would just cancel it. If able, you might consider to temporarily copy the data to another drive, format this drive that's taking a long time to run chkdsk, then copy the data back. Afterwards, see if chkdsk may run quicker.

Is it alright to cancel it? I heard that when chkdsk is running, you can't disrupt or cancel it, because it will cause some of your files corrupted or damage to the drive. And let say that I cancel it and do like what you suggest and the chkdsk still run very slowy, does it mean that my HD is going to die soon? Anyway thank you for your reply Brink.

It's ok to cancel it. You just don't want to do a hard shut down and restart to stop it.

After you format the drive, run chkdsk before copying anything back to see how it goes. If it's still real slow, then yeah that could be an indication that the drive has to many bad sectors and could be on it's last leg.

Running a hard drive test program (ex: SeaTools) from the hard drive manufacturer's website can help determine if the drive is failing or not depending on if it passes the programs test or not.
