Hello DShuck, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's only because you just needed to read and do the rest of the steps (especially 8-10) to move the extracted VBS file into the Program Files folder first so that it will be there for the shortcut to run it. This is why it cannot be found when you run the shortcut without doing that first.

Please start over and be sure to do it step by step. Just let me know if you have any other problems though. :)

OK - It appears that my file associations for .vbs are set "notepad.exe" and not for vbs script file. What file hould it be associated with and where on Win 7 (x64) should it be found/ In the System32 folder or the SysWOW64 folder?

    DShuck,

Ah ok. Sorry, from your description it sounded like you skipped a few steps.

You can download and merge the vbs option in the tutorial below to restore the default associations for that file extension. Hopefully it will work for you afterwards.

    System Restore Point Shortcut

    Hi Brink

Thanks, that got me at least half the way there. The shortcut "Create a System Restore Point" now works. However the "Instant Restore Point" script doesn't. After I click on the shortcut it launches the UAC and then not appears to happen, no pop-up window or error messages appear.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again!!!

    System Restore Point Shortcut

    Hi Brink

While waiting for your reply I tried to do a System Restore and received the following error message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

    Details:
System Restore failed to replace the file (C:\Windows) with its original copy from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80071a90)

I have received this error before as well as one stating that my Anti-Virus might be causing it. However, my firewall was not on and the Restore was operating in a "clean boot" environment with no "start-up" items running and only basic services running (which include the Shadow Copy Service). I also get the same results while running in normal mode (with all start-up items running).

Have you every seen this before?

    DShuck,

The "Instant Restore Point" shortcut will not display anything when ran. It will just create a restore point instantly in the background without notice. If it is successful, you will see the restore point listed while trying to do a system restore.

Yep, I've seen that System Restore (0x80071a90) error before. It's usually caused by some 3rd party security program installed on your computer preventing the creation of the restore point. As a test, temporarily disable or uninstall any 3rd party antivirus and/or firewall program to see if you may be able to create a restore point using the normal method afterwards.

Thanks Shawn. Works beautifully. I've also put the instant RP script into a scheduled task. Now that I don't use the Windows File Backup daily I was missing the daily RP that created.
