DiskPart is fine. I prefers one that's tried and true.

I've put off formatting that machine and installing Win 7 for months. I think I can face it now. If I turn it into a huge doorstop, and can just put in a different HD.

Yes, and? I fail to see any logics in that sentence.

Ofc I'll go to your original problem to try and address it. And why not skip all replies in between as there was nothing to say there. I read them and then I read your most recent question and then I gave you a rather reasonable reply. So instead of being thankless try to reason what ppl advise you.

My uncle is an accountant and wants to wipe his hard drive as to assure a client that his information cannot be recovered by the irs. Clearly a hammer and sulfuric acid would provide nearly absolute assurance, but are there any free or not free software options i can suggest to him?
    Thanks.

Hello UnKnown4mat, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

What type of drive are your trying to run the clean command on?

Usually this error is an indication of drive failure.
