    Indeed. That's what I wrote before - I found all instances of that file, changed them, but the log on background was still the same.

    Sure, I used the tutorial.

    But I just want to understand where does Windows keep the original image - if all instances of background.bmp are changed and no other picture file (i.e. jpg, png, etc.) contain the default image anymore.

    No, this has no noticeable affect on the startup time by changing the log on screen background image. :)

    Any way to change the icon overlay? The one in explorer.exe only changes it in the start menu.

    Do you mean the user account log on picture in the icon? If so, then this will help show you how to change it.
