65.55.39.12 is Microsoft in Redmond but not sure why it is communicating with 'home' except perhaps to check for updates maybe? I have no idea about a universal location pointer, sorry. I'd leave that to the person who thought up the code in the first place. As long as the code is there and a warning is posted it should be enough.
What does "your" refer to? The Tutorial on page one of this thread? If so is there anything else needed to do to "Reinstate Windows Mail on Windows 7" other than run the batch file?
Also I imagine that if Microsoft borks the msoe.dll file with a future Windows 7 update, a new version for Vista computers will be ported over to the first page of the tutorial and that new version would have to be substituted for the one in your zip file download.

Great thread - thanks Poppa Bear. I've used Outlook for years because of the loss of OE, but I immediately activated WM upon reading this thread, because I personally only use the mail portions of Outlook myself. Further, I can't quickly explain Outlook to most low-end users, and they wind up using webmail.
One question though. On the surface, I'm having trouble importing my Outlook messages - I get a message "Messages canot be imported from the MAPI client. MAPI is not installed on this computer or an error occurred while initializing it." I tried renaming mapi.dll and running fixmapi.exe, but it made no difference. Any suggestions?

Actually I have Outlook 2010 and Windows Mail together on my Vista machine and neither of the above helped....sorry. I got the same error you did. Back to the drawing board.
Perhaps I should have mentioned that I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64, SP1 and all the latest updates, plus Office 2010 Professional, latest SP and all updates to today. I've been on Outlook for years now, since moving to XP.
Most of what I've read is related to people running XP and Office 2000, etc.
Great tutorial - and I (eventually) got it all right - although I still have to resolve a problem of linking to the content of the messages which seems to have arisen when I switched the message store from C to D drive!
However, the particular issue I'd like help with is that I had hundreds of Message Rules in Vista (32-bit Home Premium), which don't seem to have transferred to Win 7 (64-bit Home Premium), and I really don't want to have to create them again (as I had to when switching TO Windows Mail from OE). I've searched this forum without success for others with this problem, so I guess I must have done something wrong. Any ideas?
Finally, will Windows Mail (now in Win 7) continue effectively to be updated by MS for security issues etc? Also, what will happen when SP2 (etc) comes along?
Further to 29 Feb post, I've sorted the missing message content by starting again and leaving it all in C! However, I've given up on the Message rules front and I've started the tedious business of recreating them all - at least giving me the chance to reconsider some old ones!
However, I have one remaining problem - which I can see has been experienced by others, although none of the suggestions I've seen posted here work for me.
The basic problem is that I can't activate the 'send mail' links in IE9 etc because I just can't get Win7 (64-bit Home Premium) to show Windows Mail in the Default Programs list; it shows Live Mail, even though I still haven't accepted its installation. Nevertheless I have succeeded in associating .eml files (described as Windows Mail E-mail Messages) with Windows Mail; WM also appears in the Computer Defaults program configuration (Custom), but selecting it doesn't make it appear in the default program list (and the selection reverts to 'use my current email program').
By the way, 4 possible clues for anyone who can diagnose the precise problem for me:
a) if I choose NOT to 'enable access' to WLM, the Mail icon disappears from my taskbar and start menu;
b) the WinMail.exe file only remains visible in the Windows Mail folder as long as I unhide protected operating systems;
c) I still see the splash screen on startup of Windows Mail;
d) in AppData......Local Folders my inboxes etc all have an accompanying (1) folder which actually contains the messages (although all the messages appear correctly in the WinMail interface and no further copies are created on restarting.
I DO hope that I don't need to start all over again, as I've now invested considerable time in Message Rules (and reconfiguring corrupted Inbox folder nests and (longer) titles). Can all these be successfully saved (and reloaded) within Win7, if I should need to go back?

I don't have IE9 yet nor 64bit (IE8 & 32 bit) At the moment I use IE8 so I don't know the differences would make yet, not only that I never did have Windows Live Mail installed at the same time as WM - that complicates things for you.
How does WLM show in your Programs list if you haven't installed it yet? Anyway at first it was determined not to have WLM installed at all when using WM, but that may have changed but I never followed that particular scenario through the threads since I had no intention on using WLM at the same time, why would one want to?
