Hello Replicator, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if downloading and merging the lnk (LNK) in the tutorial below to see if it may be able to help with this after restarting the computer. It will restore the default associations for shortcuts.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

I have two computers, one runs Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit and the other Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I installed the switch user shortcut on the 32 bit machine and all works fine. I then installed everything on the 64 bit machineand each time I launch the shortcut I get the User Account Control window asking if I want to allow the program to make changes to the computer. Both computers have the User Account Control at the default level. Is there a way to get this shortcut to bypass the User account Control without setting the control to the lowest level.

Hello Ron, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check to make sure that you have unblocked both the shortcut and the tsdiscon.exe file on the 64-bit machine. It sounds like you may not have unblocked one of them.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Shawn
I checked and both files are unblocked. The Switch User Icon on my 64 bit screen shows up with the shield while on the 32 bit machine the icon is without the shield.

Sorry for the late reply Ron. I had to setup a VM with the same OS as you to test it again.

I didn't get a UAC shield on the "Switch User" shortcut icon using Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.

What happens when you run the tsdiscon.exe file directly from your desktop? Do you still get a UAC prompt or shield?

Hi Shawn
As per your suggestion, I set the User Account Control back to the default level on my computer and ran the tsdiscon.exe file from the desktop and it ran fine, no User Account Control question. I created a shortcut for the program and it worked properly from either the desktop or pinned to the taskbar. Next I edited the new shortcut to point to the file in the System32 directory and again I got the User Account Control question. I've put the tsdiscon.exe file in the Windows root directory and edited the shortcut to point to that file and everything works fine.

Its possible that I have some issues with the 64 bit computer as I have had some issues trying to run IE9 on it and have had to switch back to IE8.

Thanks for your help, I could get around the issue by setting the User Account Control to the lowest level but I like the security of having it notify me when installing software.

Ron,

It sounds like you may have changed the security permissions of the "System32" folder somehow. Do you remember taking ownership or changing the permissions of it at anytime?

I would recommend to keep the tsdiscon.exe file in the "Windows" folder instead since it works fine from it.

Thanks for your help with this. I don't recall changing any permissions on the folders unless inadvertantly but will check and see if there is any difference with the 32 bit machine. As you suggest, I will continue running with the tsdiscon.exe file in the windows directory.

Have a good day
Ron
