You're most welcome Gregor. I'm happy to hear it's back up and running again. :)
So back again to the original task at hand:
The first problem i ran into was when I opened the copy of imageres.dll that was on my desktop with ResHacker I saw nothing:
Also, Brink, the SS's you posted (step 9 and so on) show the imageres.dll file you had open was located in the System32 folder and not on your desktop. So I am confused if I am supposed to be altering the original imageres.dll file located in System32? (which I am able to do with ResHack), or something is not going right if I cannot edit the desktop copy?
Hello Gregor,
That was just a older screenshot when it use to work from that location. The correct location to edit is the one copied to the desktop.
Did you use "Run as administrator" with Resource Hacker?
Yeah I ran it as admin. Do you suggest I work from the original in the System32 folder and keep a copy of the original? Because I do in fact see the sub-folders of imagres.dll and am able to replace the sound when working with the original in ResHack.
Yes, you could try doing it with that one, but use "Save as" to save it to the desktop instead. Afterwards, do step 16 on to replace the System32 one with the modified one.
Little confused on about that second sentence, could ya clarify it plz. Cheers
Sorry, after making changes to the file and using "Save as" to save it to the Desktop, you would pick up at step 16 in the tutorial to use the "Save as" file on the desktop to replace the System32 file with.
Hi,
i found another way to do this, and it doesn't involve changing the dll. I posted it here:
Change startup sound without a dll hack!
Maybe that's of use to some people.

If I have 2 internal hard drives, do I need to type list disk in command prompt?
Hello Andre,
Nope. You will still need to use "list volume" to be able to see and verify what the drive letter is of your Windows 7 partition at boot to be able to use the drive letter in the command. "list disk" wouldn't show you what the drive letters are. :)
