Well I'd figured as much, but I had already taken the HDDs out and couldn't be bothered having to go through it all again just to get the restore to work. I will remember next time. I was able to get my files out of the incremental backups.
I have same problem, and tried moving before googling and finding this site.

But I preserved previous HDD partition, so trying to shrink the original boot partition.

    Main HDD : 300GB, 56 Used
    reserved new HDD : 160GB

Unfortunately, disk manager says 'You can save only 110GB for fragmentation of disk' so I treat it first.

    So boring...

    Finally, I failed.
Thought I tried to shrink my boot volume under 120GB, it has limitation in 170GB.

Some reasons i don't know make it impossible to shrink.

    I'm reinstalling all systems.

Is it possible to restore the image to a completely different hard drive? Right now my 7 Ultimate is running on a 200GB WD drive. I think the drive is starting to fail and ordered a 640gb WD. Will I be able to create an image on a store drive and restore it to the new hard drive?

Do I need to reinstall windows 7 on the new drive before restoring it or can I load the image after the drive has been formatted?

As long as the saved system image backup is located in the original location, you can restore Windows 7 on the new drive without having to install Windows 7 first by using the tutorial on the first page.

    Hi Shawn,

Does that mean if the image is moved - it might not be recognized?

Or, if there is a change to partitions - so the image location appears different - it also may not be picked up ?

As long as the backup itself is not moved or copied to another location, it should work just fine. When the image backup folder is manually moved or copied to say another hard drive, then it may not be recognized when trying to restore it from the new location.

Thought that may be the case. Could be a problem there.

It was also like that with Vista Backup - a lot of people in all kinds of trouble.
