Task - Create to Run a Program at Startup and Log On

I'm posting here to make note of the fact that this Tutorial solved my problem. Initially, I was trying to follow the instructions in this other Tutorial:

On my own, before Brink/Shawn pointed me to this Tutorial, I had created an entry in Task Scheduler directly in the Task Scheduler Library. With that entry, at one point I actually had a taskmgr.exe running, but no Task Manager window was open. I discovered that by manually opening the Task Manager window & it showed 2 instantiations of taskmgr.exe, one under user SYSTEM launched via Task Scheduler, and the other under my user ID launched manually by me to look at what was going on. Which was actually kind of funny . . .

The solution ended up being this Tutorial. By adding one level of indirection, my problem was solved. I created a folder within the Task Scheduler Library and placed the exact same auto-start item within this lower-level folder, and everything started working. I have made a mental note that if I ever add something new that I want automatically started at bootup or logon, I will put it in my lower-level folder and not in the higher-level Task Scheduler Library. That will be for both elevated & non-elevated tasks.

Aside from the fact that this works, I like the aesthetics of organizing my stuff into my folder. There's a number of products installed on my system that put their own entries in the high-level library so I don't know why a plebe like me couldn't do the same. But I couldn't & this was the solution so I'm not looking any further for answers.

Is this for a program that must run as administrator to use? If so, you would need to use the tutorial below to create a shortcut to use in this tutorial on the first page instead.

It sounds like you are trying to run a program as administrator at the startup of a standard user account. You might give what I posted above at try with that tutorial first to create a shortcut to then use in this tutorial on the first page to see if that may work better for you.

Is this on a domain?

I reinstalled my W7 OS last week and I stupidly installed all of my programs to W7's default location(s) instead of a separate partition.
Now I can't get my Task Scheduler task to run.

I want to start Process Explorer (in Admin mode).
I exported the task (before I reinstalled the OS) and used it as a template to create the new task.

Regardless of what settings I try, I get either 8007010b or 41301 errors.

I don't want to have to repartition and reinstall everything again.
It was a total debacle filled with weird glitches and mysterious happenings.
It took 3 attempts to get everything installed and working.

Are you able to edit the task's action to change the path to the correct one?

If not, then you should be able to delete the task, and just create a new task for the program.

I'm using an all new task (I built a completely new task using the old one as a guide).

I discovered that you aren't allowed to use quotes (") in paths in the "Start in" box (wtf?).
That fixed the 8007010b error.

I can't get rid of the 41301 error.

I can see that the task is running (if open another instance of Process Explorer) but the problem is that no window is available (a GUI monitor isn't much use without a window).

I decided to try out Avast AV (I was running AVG) so it's possible that it is causing the problem.
I've added Process Explorer to the exceptions, but maybe I need to add the Task Scheduler as well.
