Imaging with free Macrium

1. you need an image that contains these partitions either by themselves or as part of an image with other partitions.
2. When you select the image in the restore screen you make sure the partition you wish to restore is checked and the others are unchecked. This is using the PE recovery disk. I have never done it with the Linux disk so I don't know what the procedure is there.

You might like to browse through the tutorials in the Macrium knowledgebase. They are for the Standard Macrium so some of the features you see may be missing but they are worth a look. Macrium KB

If you want to image only one or two partitions, make sure only those partitions are checked (see checkmarks to which the red arrows point). If you have several partitions on the disk, you can uncheck all with the checkmark in the red box in front and then check the one partition you want to image.

For the recovery you need to burn the recovery disc. I suggest you burn the WinPE disc because it gives you more options than the Linux disc. You can also use it to make images.

The WinPE version Boot Recovery option works very well, had to use it today on a laptop that wouldn't respond to any of the several other boot repair methods tried.

yes - each partition by itself. But you must not mix partitions during the imaging process. Then it is too easy to make a mistake. I always image each partition by itself and into it's own folder. Then I do not get mixed up with the XMLs and it is practically impossible to make a mistake during the recovery.

1. Free Macrium always makes full images - which I prefer because they are reliable and easy to manage.In Macrium Pro you can use incrementals (sucks) and differentials (better).

when i want to do imaging backup to external HDD, which "image this disk" icon should i click?

2. This question I do not understand. Can you post a picture of what you are looking at with an explanation on the picture

I tried with my usb drive.It came as follows.I couldnot take screen shots so i'm explaining the steps dat came in the blue screen wizard.Pls help me.
Wen i opened ithe rescue.iso during booting from pendrive,a window opened As
1.Restore Wizard V5.0.4286.
2.Press next to continue.I pressed next,den
3.It said to locate the image.It showed two portions.In upper portion i selected the C drive image file wich i had stored in another drive.In the lower portion it showed my C drive(type:NTFS) and the disk space as 29.491GB.

6.I selected C(type:Primary)
7.Next
8.Choose the target disk(Select a disk to be used as the restore target)
9.Next
10.Select the drive from the following to start restoring.
But i could not see any drive there.It was fully white with no drive to select in it.Den wen i pressed next it said Please select the drive to restore or Select the target drive.But i did not find any drive in it.It was totally blank white screen.Pls help me wat to do.I'm not understanding y its not showing my C drive in it.

Hi Kumuranil. It looks like for some reason the recovery disk has not located your C drive.

1. Can you remember if it was shown in the tree when you looked for an image?
2. What type of disk is it and is it damaged?
3. Sometimes it helps if you shutdown your PC completely and leave it for a while before rebooting to the USB.
4. If none of that works and you have a running windows system it would be better to create the WinPE recovery disk although that will involve a 1.7GB download of the WAIK. It is a much more capable recovery environment.

Keith is right. Go with the WinPE recovery disc. It is a little lengthy to create but it is worth it.
