The WinPE disc from my registered version of v4.2 has a feature called Disk Restore which can in fact restore a multi-partition image in one fell swoop, effectively enabling Macrium to migrate an entire HD to a new one. (Which is exactly what I did with it.)
I have no idea if the free version has Disk Restore but thought I would mention it.

Yeah, that is called "cloning" as opposed to "imaging". Cloning is per drive and imaging is per partition.

Yes, but with one small but important distinction. You don't just clone the entire HD in a single file; you still have an image containing multiple partitions which you can restore either individually or all at once. That's the neat part. :) Usually cloning software just sees the whole disk as a single unit without regard for partition layouts.

Right on here Corazon I thought it would be so easy ....wrong!

After three hours I got it done and I have to own up to being a tad hasty in doing it, and mucking it up.

I got a fresh drive formatted the thing and ran it in Macrium found the initial partition done and sat there wondering what was going on > did it again – same result initial partition done.

The Eureka moment came when I was selecting the drive to be cloned and then went to choose it again and saw the message at the top of the screen telling me to drag and drop the drive to b cloned – C: into – F:. So 32 mins later I have my cloned drive.

I think I see things too simply when doing stuff like this I thought it would be set and forget. So this morning am going to jumper the cloned drive and see what happens.

Some politician once said – life wasn't meant to be easy

So will be interesting when I clone my main machine - a Seagate 1TB with an identical drive wonder if I'll get the wizard this time??

Mind you I am not impressed with Acronis and their free trial - finding the clone was not available after an hour of downloading it on the old XP

DiskRestore can be downloaded as a standalone (free) and will run under Winpe or Bartpe. I have run the exe under the mini XP environment of the Hirens Boot CD. It may also work for V5 free images.

I haven't actually restored multiple partitions using it since I prefer to restore each partition in turn.

Edit/Add: Mainly posted for users of V4.2 (free) who like me don't see a reason to jump to V5 yet.

Both the Linux and PE restore disks in v5 allow you to restore more than one partition at a time.

    Last thing

I notice the Maxtor 40GB (original) is jumpered to master AND slave - it must have been like that when I took it out of the original machine - should I set it (the original 40GB) to just the master and the second drive (Maxtor 60GB) to be cloned as slave?

Plus will the clone overwrite anything on the second drive as it is a used one.

Am going to clone my main machine tomorrow - same et up? both are Seagates so hopefully I'll get the Discwizard to do it with.

    The jumper issue

Am ready to go ahead now but still don't know if I should remove that slave jumper on the drive to be cloned - the old Maxtor that is jumpered master and slave.

Anyone please as I don't want to get this effort mucked up. Have tried contacting Seagate but it is a very expensive phone call and via the net takes so long.
