Offscreen File Recovery

I pasted a file near the top of my Windows 7 desktop and it disappeared above the top of the desktop screen. I got it back; here's how: Open the User Folder (Computer--> C: --> Users). Choose the user, then desktop. The file appeared in that list. I cut and pasted it into a visible desktop folder.

is there some way to keep Windows from moving my windows off screen to begin with? like most people who have this problem, i know how to get my windows back, but sometimes i don't even know i've lost a window and it's languishing far off-screen. the whole point of a desktop is to visually present information in a consistent manner so that the user can interactively deal with it. if it's constantly disappearing off-screen, that makes the OS a lot less useful. and Windows 7 does this A LOT. i'm really getting weary of having to retrieve my windows every time i leave my computer for an hour. are there any utilities i can run to get this to stop happening? at this point i'm seriously considering migrating my whole workstation to Linux running KDE (which i've confirmed is not plagued by this issue).

Hello bigfun, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Usually it's user error that causes a window to go off screen for whatever reason.

Have you noticed anything specific that happens when it goes offscreen?

it's certain windows from certain applications on certain screens. i have five screens -- perhaps that's the problem. anyway, i leave the computer for an hour or so and i come back to find some screens are cleared of windows and others are full of the windows from those screens, while other windows have moved beyond the edge of the screens and must be retrieved blind (using Alt-space-M). i don't have screen savers enabled and i don't have it set so my monitors are turned off by the computer, though i do have it so that my screens are turned off by a motion sensor (if it doesn't detect my motion for five minutes-- it turns off all the monitors as well as the audio system).

Ah, that would be why then.

When a monitor is powered off like that, it causes Windows to think that the monitor is no longer connected, adjusts your screens for it not being there anymore, and possibly move the windows from the screen that got turned off to one of the other displays.

You might consider setting Windows to turn off the displays after X amount of minutes instead, and set to put your computer to sleep or hibernate X amount of minutes more than what you set for the displays. This way you wouldn't have this issue, and the computer and displays still get turned off when you like.

it's not that simple; if i turn off the monitors manually (simulating the power turned off by the motion sensor), i can leave it off for 20 minutes and when i turn it back on, everything is as it was. it's only after an hour or so that things get scrambled. it's as if there is some process that runs periodiocally that is designed to throw chaos into my work environment. i would like to make it stop. nothing i have tired has worked. for awhile i had a working system without this problem but then i replaced a samsung syncmaster 204B with an asus 1920 X 1200 monitor and since then the scrambling has plagued me.

When the motion sensor kills the power to the monitors, that is why things get scrambled.

It's not a Windows issue, because you basically disconnected the monitor by killing it's power source. That behaves the same as unplugging the monitor from the AC source.

The only way to stop it from scrambling things is to stop killing the power like that.

Thank you!

I have two computers and a Tripp-Lite KVM. Sometimes the KVM/Windows makes computer 1 go blank when I am on computer 2 for a while. Sometimes the monitor on computer 1 turns off.

I have work-arounds that minimize the problem. But sometimes I am on computer 2 for an hour, switch back to computer 1 and it works just fine.
